Anamorphic goes 4:3
I'm editing a documentary shot in 16:9. Whenever I export a sequence to QT (to burn to DVD), it appears squeezed, in 4:3. How can I fix this? Many thanks.

Quicktime doesn't understand anamorphic 'flags'. If you are exporting 720X480 video for Quicktime, you'll need to change the horizontal dimension to 853 pixels.

This is one of the most often asked questions.
Basically, you are fine-- 16:9 DV anamorphic footage is really nothing more than just 4:3 footage. It is on playback that a widescreen TV will stretch it out to appear correctly. [If you were to export that footage back to tape and hook it up to a widescreen set--it will look correct--and on a 4:3 set--it will look squeezed] When you author your DVD, you have to flag your movie as 16:9 anamorphic. When your dvd player is hooked up to a widescreen set--the dvd player does nothing but pass on the footage to your set. When it is connected to a 4:3 set, the DVD player will automatically letterbox[squish down] your footage for proper display. |
