Open timeline FCP6
Question,
If I want to shoot footage with an HVX200 mostly in 24p but want also shoot some overcranked footage(for slow mo) as well. A. Do I have to capture the clips separate still using different presets? B. What happens when I drop it into the open timeline..does it just conform to the timeline? or will it playback at the fps the clips was shot at? If this doesnt make sense...how to you mix overcranked footage with 24p footage in FCP6? Thank you ahead of time. |
Black Curtain
I have a stage video (shot with Canon XH A1-HDV60i) that has a black back curtain with no light splashed on it. It creates a very strong waveform signal at 1-3%. When I encode it for DVDSP, the black becomes pixelated and blocky with the very few shades of black.
What's the best way to deal with this? 1. Push the black level up with the 3-way color corrector limited to black only with the luma. Add a little smoothing. Or just add smoothing 2. Apply Nattress noise reduction filter. 3. Use another filter and method to smooth the black. 4. Encode in Compressor with shorter GOP 5. All of the above 6. Other |
Adobe (was Serious Magic) ULTRA chromakeyer now runs on VMWare inside Mac OSX
Something of a curio, but if anyone's interested, I just got Serious Magic's ULTRA running on the latest update (1.1) of VMWare's Fusion. It won't work with GPU boost activated since this requires pixel shader support which is not supported with the DirectX 9 virtualization in Fusion. Therefore of limited use, but I just used it to successfully output some test footage. They seem to be working fast on this, so I'm hoping for shader support soon(ish).

Fix Disappearing Render Files in FCP6
The issue at hand is after rendering any sequence then saving and quitting FCS, upon re-opening FCS and the same project the render files get moved to the Trash. Not sure what causes this behavior but here's two fixes we've verified works:
1. Prior to re-opening FCS check your Trash; if you see the render folders there simply move them back to where you've told FCP to make them. 2. (Permanent fix) If possible (assuming you have more than 2 drives to work with) move your Thumbnail & Waveform Cache and Autosave Vault location to a physically different drive than where your render files are being sent. This seems to clear the issue. |
FCP is lagging pretty bad
We are editing a project on FCP 4.5. When we start up it's fine but eventually starts to lag. It didn't start doing this until after we added RAM to the computer. We started a new project thinking the other one was corrupt but that didn't help. If we quit the program and re-launch, it is ok for a while but eventually starts to lag again. We are working on a Dual 2GHz powerPC G5 with 3.5GB RAM. The project is pretty simple, 13.3mb file size, SD, 16:9 timeline.

29.97 and 23.98 matted together in the same frame?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I'm working on a 23.98 film project in FCP. To make a long story short, I need to garbage matte 29.97 material on top of a portion of my 23.97 frame in order to hide a timecode window burn. When I do this, however, I experience horizontal interlace jaggies from my 29.97 footage. I've attached a photo of what I'm experiencing. You'll see a 23.97 frame with an identical 29.97 image masking the bottom half of each image. Does anybody know the best way to blend 23.97 material with 29.97 material in the same frame? My final output is a 29.97 NTSC DVD, and I'm working in FCP 6. Many thanks for any suggestions! - David |
A load of FCS updates released today
Hi all,
This is of interest to all who use FCS 2. Apple released a whole bunch of updates today. Here's a nice overview: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles..._security.html Notably, FCP includes a couple very nice fixes, and I noticed that the new DVD StudioPro now natively supports 24F HD formats! I've been waiting for this as this will allow us to burn HD-DVDs at 24F. Regards, |
how to ingest all this?
i have a 4 camera setup that all feeds HD/SDI into a datavideo SE1000. I am then taking that one program out and sending it to my MacPro via Multibridge where it will be combined with the audio from the sound board. My question is I would like to capture one camera straight to hard drive for back up purposes or in case I miss a cut. I want everything to interface very nicely with my MacPro and was wondering how I would set this up?
Should I get an xserve with an hd/sdi card for ingest? Can I just get some sort of hard drive that will capture straight from HD/SDI? Anyone have any thoughts? |
Help With 30p And 60i Footage
Just shot a wedding with an XH-A1 and HV20 but now I have a problem. I kept the HV20 in 60i while I changed the A1 to 30p. Now I can not use multicam in FCS2 to edit the footage. What is the easiest and quickest way to get these two clips to the same codec?

question about 24fps timelines
hey guys, quick, and probably stupid question:
is it possible to set my timeline and capturing settings to be 24fps with 2332 pulldown and then capture regular 60i video(29.95fps), thus converting it to 24fps? becuase i did it and it seems to play back in the viewer alright, the audio is in sync and everything..but i have a feeling that people dont do this for a reason...? |
Plugins / Effects
I came across a site a couple weeks ago that had some really cool grunge type effects both visual and audio. But....i forgot to save it and can't seem to locate it again. Any websites that have any cool retro, grunge type plugins or .mov files?

Component Image Darker than Composite Image
I've been previewing the project I've been editing on my good SD monitor - it's an HD project that I've been viewing via Composite and real-time down-scaling with my Decklink HD Extreme. So far, so good.
I can calibrate my monitor fine, and using the FCP supplied color bars, I can set it so the last PLUGE bar can be seen.. all per the manual. So I then tried Component out - same system, same monitor, same FCP project - nothing changed - didn't even restart or close and open the FCP project. All of a sudden the image is darker on the monitor. No matter what I do, I can't brighten the monitor enough to see the last PLUGE bar! Everthing is maxed out on the monitor. Even the override provided by the Decklink software can brighten everything - but not enough to reach the 'average' levels that the Composite cable was at. So I can't even calibrate the monitor to meet the signal that the computer is outputting. I swapped back to Composite - everything was as it was before. I know the cables are great - it's not their fault. I know the monitor works fine - because, it does. What's going on with Component being darker? I'd prefer the Component solution naturally - sharper! |
Capture Issues- drop-frame vs. non drop-frame
I'm using FCP 6 with the latest updates. Since I installed FCP 6, whenever I go to batch capture footage I get a warning that says "You are about to capture drop-frame footage from a non drop-frame source." It does this no matter what deck I capture from or what camera I shot the footage with (shooting mostly with a Z1U, FWIW). Thus far I've ignored the warning without any apparent problems, however, today during a relatively long capture I got a warning saying that it detected a switch from drop-frame to non drop-frame within the same tape, and it aborted the capture attempt automatically. It shouldn't have detected a switch b/c the footage was all shot with the same camera during the same shoot. I've searched the forums and elsewhere online without any luck so far. Any suggestions?

Clip Notes equivalent for FCP?
In Premiere Pro you can export to a PDF file called Clip Notes. The viewer looks at the footage in the PDF and enters their comments throughout the clip in a text box at the bottom and then closes it back up and returns it to the editor in the same PDF format. This is extremely handy but I have only seen it for Premiere Pro, do you know if there is something similiar for FCP?

Capturing SD 16:9 with 24pa
Hi,
This is a fairly simple question, I just want to make sure I'm doing this right before I capture a bunch of footage... So, I've got a lot of footage shot in 24pa and I want to edit it in FCP with the 24pa pulldown removal. It's standard definition video, but it's shot on an XL2 (in the native widescreen). I obviously want to import it at full quality and resolution. So... My capture settings should obviously be set to remove the 24pa pulldown, etc, but what about the box that says "Anamorphic." Should I check that? When I do that it doesn't change the boxes for horizontal and vertical resolution (still says 480x720). In reality the picture is probably like 480x8__-something? I DO NOT WANT letterboxes. Should I put in a specific number? So basically I'm asking if someone would be kind enough to tell me, in an idiot-proof way, the specific settings I need to use in FCP6 to capture the HIGHEST quality possible, non-letterboxed footage shot in 16:9 SD 24pa (with pulldown removed so it's true 24p) off an XL2. Thank you very much, -Stephen |
Outputting in FCP 6
I am currently cutting a trailer for a long term HDV documentary I am working on to screen for some of my investors.
I am editing the raw footage, mostly 1080p24 with some 1080i60 in FCP 6 on a Mac pro. As a preliminary trial I duped the trailer sequence and went File > Export > Quick Time Movie... The exported sequence plays fine on any Mac but not on any PC. I only have a PC laptop to bring to the screening. How do I get my trailer into a format that will play back on my PC laptop through an LCD projector? The PC laptop has the latest version of QT loaded but it gives an error message saying that it needs more info to play the trailer, it doesn't specify what info it needs. The PC in question is running Win XP SP2. Thanks for any help you can give. Rich. |
AE to FCP to iDVD ... new problem
I've been working with After Effects 7, Final Cut Pro 5.1, and iDVD 4 (on a dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 running OS 10.4.11) for about six months now, and I've never had this problem happen before, so I'm not quite certain how to fix it.
I assembled a photo montage in AE; it includes elements like page curl and speech balloons that appear and disappear. I needed to add five pieces of music, so I used the Render Queue in AE to create a QuickTime movie (default "Best Settings," "Lossless"), which I pulled into FCP so I could edit five pieces of music under the montage. When I imported the QT movie into FCP, it looked squished in the Canvas monitor until I turned off the "square pixels" option. I added the music and output the FCP file as a "reference" QT movie (unchecked "self-contained"), which is my normal output before burning in iDVD. But when I import the movie into iDVD, the resulting image is slightly squished again (people tall and skinny). I've checked the image against other projects I've done; it looks like iDVD is trying to fit the entire image into the screen by making it non-proportional (which is why everything looks too tall and skinny). Normally, it just cuts off the left and right edges and keeps everything proportional -- but not this time. I've never had this problem happen before, and I can't figure out where in the process the problem is occurring. The After Effects composition is set to 720x480, DV aspect ratio (0.9), and so is the FCP sequence. When I "get info" on the QT file I exported from FCP, the settings look exactly the same as previous files (720 x 480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC). I'm still experimenting to see if I can find a solution on my own, but I'd welcome suggestions, too. |
Editing V1U footage with FCP
I have FCP set up to capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec, device control using Sony HDV Firewire. However, Final Cut just seems to allow the "capture now" option rather than letting me log and selectively capture clips. Is there a way around this so as to edit "normally"?
I'm trying to edit in a 24p timeline, and to do that, capturing as mentioned above, doing reverse telecine with Cinema Tools to 23.98, then importing that into FCP. |
HDV 60 minutes or longer?
I would like to hear some opinions on burnning longer projects in HDV for example would it be better to get and external hard drive to put my longer projects on that I cant burn to a D-5 disc due to their size but instead transfur the finished project to an external drive and take it to a dup house and let them put it on a hd dvd disk for me.

Finally, 4ch 1-pass audio capture comes to the Mac
Wow, I just captured 4 independent audio channels using my newly updated QT for Mac. I'd be curious to know if others are finding this to work for them in Quicktime 7.3. I haven't been able to find any official documentation on this anywhere.
Historically, Mac users have been out of luck if they were trying to capture dv content that had more than the standard 2 channels of audio and they wanted to keep the channels independent, without having to run a 2nd pass to get the 2nd 2 channels of audio. Windows PC users have been able to use Scenalyzer to do this with much reported convenience and success. While the following may not be of immediate benefit in the context of an NLE, I thought it quite interesting. Every so often, I have had to capture a dv tape with 4 channels of audio content into FCP. Sometimes, I just ran 2 passes in FCP, and other times, especially if I was planning to do some added work on the audio before dropping it into FCP, I would just handle the capture directly within the QT 7 recording feature to capture the audio into a QT .mov file and export the individual channels into separate 48Khz aif files. Either way, it always required a 2nd pass if I had more than 2 tracks of audio on the tape. Not anymore. What I used to do was have to select my dv source along with either "first 2 channels" or "2nd 2 channels" when setting up the capture. Today, I updated my QT to 7.3 and I only now just ran a 4 ch dv tape through the audio record feature. I wasn't presented with the channels options this time. So I ran it anyway, and when I looked at the audio settings in the resulting .mov file, I discovered 4 separate audio channels listed. So I checked each one to ensure that they were, in fact, independent. They were. So all I had to do at that time was designate the appropriate left, right, center or unused settings for each track and export them accordingly to get my 48 Khz aif files and it worked perfectly. Granted, it would be even nicer if this existed directly within FCP, and unfortunately, my older version of FCP HD 4.5 was unaffected by this update. However, since my updating session also included a new Pro app support download, I am wondering if this multi-channel 1-pass capture capability may have seen its way into FCP 5 or 6. Any users out there who wanna check this out? Either way, its a bit of added convenience for those few times I have to deal with 4 ch dv audio. Just thought y'all would want to know. Cheers. -Jon |
Final Cut Pro 6 Settings with JVC HDV
Hi All
I'm still battling FCP issues. I've got a mix of DV cam, Sony SX (both 16x9) and now JVC 25P. The FCP sales pitch says it will seemlessly deal with all the different forms. I'm finding though that if I set sequence/timeline presets to 25p I get weird sized pictures for some of the DV cam. If I set DV settings the HDV shrinks. Can some one set me straight as to how I should set up my video settings in FCP it would be greatly appreciated as I'm doing my nana here. Thanks in advance. |
Looking for a program
Hello I am new to the FCS2 workflow. I came from the Adobe CS3 workflow. One of the things that I really like in the Adobe Workflow was clipnotes. In doing my research on making the switch I found a program that did the same thing as clipnotes but it was for FCP. Does anyone know of this program and if you do what is the name and how does it work?
For those who do not know what clipnotes is. This program is part of AE and Premiere that lets you export a video file wrapped in to a PDF. The Client then can stop the video and make timecode accuate comments that then I can import into premiere or AE that come up as a marker. I then go to a marker and make that change and move on. There is no need to print out emails or try to read a quickly written chicken scratch hand writting to make the changes. This saves me a ton of time. So I am hoping I can find that program once again so I can try it out I am still looking. Let me know if any one finds it. |

DVD Studio crashes during Build?
Has anyone had a problem importing H.264 compressed files into DVD Studio Pro and when finished and checking everything to see that it works, I go into file, Burn, Build and as soon as it gets about 7% into it which would be just past the chapters ect and starting into the video portion of the build DVD Studio just shuts down for no reason. I have used build in the past and it has worked fine so if anyone has had this problem and knows why it occures PLEASE let me know. Thanks in advance Gary Williams

capture directly to a DVD compatible format
Hi all
I'm looking for a software that can capture (Via firewire) directly from my camera (while filming) about 3 hours of DV to a DVD compatible format that i could then burn without encoding with DSP4. Thanks |
QT codecs supporting chapter markers
Created a movie for display on a computer only and want to retain chapter markers inserted in timeline (FCP 5.1.4). The movie is long and I need something smaller than 125 GB (uncompressed 8-bit), but it needs to have chapter markers for ease of navigation. Tried compressing the 8-bit movie (1000 X 625) with markers to H.264 (same size) using QT Pro but no chapter markers (5+GB file size). Compression takes hours to accomplish, so I'm hoping to find a definitive answer rather than hunt and peck til I find the right combination. Gonna try using compressor (2.3.1) next using H.264 which I prefer the look over DV NTSC. DVC50/DVCPro50 yields too large of file sizes.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Mac Pro 2 X 2.66/5 GB Ram/Leopard X.V.I |
help exporting flash
please help
when i export flash from fcp i cannot seem to play the flash file to evalute it. also i have been getting very good results exporting from fcp using animation compression and then using flash encoder. the one problem with that is i am getting horizontal lines along the edges when there is motion. this is also a green screen effect so i am enabling the alpha channel. it's the little horizontal edging lines that is driving me crazy. anyone have a solution? much thanks, aldo |
mixing codecs
just a quick question. i have clips in a FCP sequence with both AIC and HDV codec. i made a quick test to put transitions between them and exported with compressor to Mpeg-2 90 min. best quality. i didn't test DVDSP and burn a DVD, but all seems to work fine. Are there any potential problems i may have overlooked?
would i be better off using just one codec? (i would have to re-capture many hours of footage as HDV...) thanks. |
Interlace Problem in FCP
I shot many tapes on a XL2 @ 24P.
I digitized all my content into final cut at 23.98 DV anomorphic. When FCP plays back on the monitor every couple of fields is interlaced, although when I play the clip in QuickTime it is progressive. What is the normal workflow when dealing with 24P content? Does FCP only play out NTSC? Why is it interlacing? Thanks, -Chris |
How to sync separate audio with video using timecode?
Hi,
I have shot with a Canon XL H1. I connected its timecode out to a 744T harddisk recorder via a wireless timecode link. The harddisk starts to record automatically when the camcorder starts and both recordings get the same timecode. However, they are not exactly starting and stopping at the same frame. What is the most efficient procedure to put the separate audio clips in sync with the video clips? I would like to have the tracks arranged like: v1: video track 1 a1: left audio channel from the camcorder (automatic in sync with camcorder) a2: right audio -"- a3: left audio (mono track) from harddisk recorder a4: right audio -"- I can get an appropriate synced result for one clip at a time if I manually select a video clip and the corresponding two audio files and use the function "Merge Clips" and click Timecode. However, this is quite time consuming because I have to manually find out which audio should be paired to which video clip. Merge clips seems not to be able to use with more than one video clip at a time. Is there a faster way of synchronizing a bunch of clips which all have correct timecode? Or is there a command in the Canvas/timeline window to sync the audio to the timecode value of the video? Thanks for your time. /Johan |
DVDSP (4) crashing on Video from Palette import.
Seems like DVDSP 4 is having a bit of a 'wobbler' now.
Having just built a DVD menu's et al I wanted to finish off by adding a looped video segment within the main menu (or subsequent sub menu's - have already added music and images). Unfortunately when attempting to hit the video tab within the Palette, DVDSP gives me the spinning ball treatment and I have to force quit to continue. Had a quick browse on here and the wider net but can't seem to locate a fix/answer on this. Related to the recent QT updates perhaps? Have repaired permissions but not being a 'hands inside computer' guy I'm at a loss as to what else I could do (trash preferances?). Anybody else come across this gremlin? Cheers. |
Two Soundtrack Pro 2 questions
With regard to Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2:
(1) Is there a limit of 4GB for AIFF exports? I'm trying to export a multi-channel audio file of a fairly long recording, and it keeps crashing at that point. (2) For multi-channel projects (with surround panners), when I open the envelopes in my tracklist (clicking on the little triangle next to the track list), by default many envelope types appear. Usually I just want the volume, though. Is there a way to limit the types that show up by default, or at least a quick way to hide the ones I don't need (other than clicking on every single type, for every single track)? Thanks, Martin |
HD Log & P2 Log QT bug fix
If you've previously transcoded P2 MXF with either HD Log or P2 Log in QT 7.2 or earlier, then upgraded to QT 7.3 and found many of those clips "blank", the problem was a code-change made by Apple that didn't get communicated well enough to the developers.
Imagine Products has released a new repair tool which will bring back these "blank" clips, assuming you're now using QT 7.3. Check it out: http://www.imagineproducts.com/miva/...egory_Code=MAC |
Final cut can't render, kernel issue
HI guys,
This new thread is for a colleague of mine. Problem is simple, everytime time he want to render a sequence in Final cut (latest version) it crashes and a kernel issue is shown in the log. That's pretty much the information I have, I know it's not much but if someone went through a similar issue I could suggest your workaround. Thanks Phil |
Motion Templates in FCP 6.02 Frame rate problem

Since i have upgraded to 6.02 (Motion 3.02) the Templates frame rates have jumped from 25fps to 30fps which looks fine on the timeline but is out of sync when i render. When I open the templates in Motion again the frame rate is locked! Grrr! anyone else having similar problems or found a workaround? |
Quicktime Conversion Problems
I receive edited final copy on a DVD that included bars and tone. I have to edit out the bars and tone, and convert the final output to Quicktime format for broadcast on local access cable TV.
I import the VOB files into FCE after converting with FFMPEG into DV format so I can edit. After making the changes I try to export in QuickTime format, using the custom settings to capture 720X480 NTSC 4:3 format for broadcast. The resulting output contains no audio. I use setting of 48,000 and stereo - L+R when exporting. The original DVD shows both channels of audio when imported into FCE as a DV file, and I can verify that the sound plays perfectly in FCE. What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it? Thanks in advance. |

An HG10 and FCP 24p question...
Hi there,
My workflow has been thus: Take footage shot in the HG10's 24p mode, run Log and Transfer, the transcoded footage ends up being ProRes 1440x1080 at 29.97. I take the ProRes footage and apply the Compressor step that changes the frame rate and performs the Reverse Telecine, outlined here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306389, originally written for HV20 users). I recently noticed in FCP 6.0.2's Log and Transfer util, there's a "Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames" import preferences box (checked by default, see pic): http://www.seanmccormick.biz/outbox/HG10/log.gif How does the above setting affect the incoming footage shot using 24p? Is the Reverse Telecine step in Compressor unnecessary, making it only necessary to change the frame rate after importing the files? Thanks in advance for not beating me over the head with the answer if I'm missing something obvious here. :) Any thoughts welcome, Sean |
