okay, now i'm bummed. dylan e-mailed me saying he couldn't open my link. complete deflation....

can any of you web-literate types explain why this is working for me and not for dylan? does it matter that he is using QT 6.5, and i am using 7.0.1?

You must have used the H.264 MPEG-4 codec, as I tried it on one computer with QT 6.5, and it didn't work, while it played fine on my computer with QT 7.

It worked fine for me. However I also have Quicktime 7. Don't know if this helps.

thanks, guys...i think it is just what i needed to know. i did use the H.264 MPEG-4 codec because it seemed indicated by the final cut pro manual, at least as far as i could discern it--never done a streaming web upload before. FCP 4.5 gives me too many choices!

so now i need to know--what would be the more widely-user-friendly choice of codec to use for this sort of thing? that could be viewed by the widest audience?

Gosh, Meryem, I wouldn't change a thing! I just downloaded the free Quicktime 7 and watched it with no problem.

yes, everyone with QT 7.0 and a Mac can see it, but the problem is that QT 7 for the PC is in beta, so no one with a PC can see it and no one with a Mac running 6.5 or earlier can see it either (including the DV Challenge #2 judges, which is why i am so hung up on this...i can't submit it, if they can't review it). what i need to know is what FCP compression option is most legible to the widest range of systems (so that i don't have to keep re-compressing and uploading)? i'm totally new to web delivery and don't really understand all of these formats and platforms.

Hmm...I guess I don't understand. I use a PC and viewed it just fine.

My computers are all PCs and have been since 1982 ;-).

But I do have QT 7 ... not sure if its beta or not, but I think its the final release version.

I get it now! But if you don't find the answer you need, Mereym, maybe your link could first go to a page that includes this info? (Over in the DV For the Masses forum, we encountered the same issue.) It only takes a few minutes for folks to download/install. And it's free.

that is indeed the bottom line... embedded flash would look decent if you had spent $$$ for the two-pass encoder... but embedded windows media is better quality than that, and it's on nearly as many computers as flash is.

i would not post content that first demands a player download and install before it can be seen... there are upwards of 900 million people on the 'net, so it's gonna be a long time before h.264 becomes significant.

I tried to view Meryem's film and was unable to with QT 6.5.2 so I thought, why not download Quicktime 7? So I did and watched the movie.

Turned out that 7 is not compatable with Adobe After Effects 5.5, and each time I started AE, it said it found no compatable version of quicktime and that that function would be disabled!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to repair AE, reinstall AE several times, Restore the computer several times and nothing worked. I was really surprised that QT 7 was still there after restoring to a previous date?

Finally ended up deleting QT 7, and AE. Then installed QT 6.5.2, then AE. It finally worked.

Just a hint of caution to those with XP, AE 5.5, and thinking of QT 7. Also, it is probably better to post in an older version of Quicktime!

Hope you don't mind me smiling, Mike, but I've been following your "misadventures" all weekend. You've really had a time of it!!! Maybe you should take a little vacation and shake off the bad luck that's been following you around. :)

As for Meryem's ordeal, she's probably got it figured out by now, but I only posted the workaround because of the time constraints she faced with the contest. I wish a Mac user would have answered her question about codecs and saved her having to read all of my posts. Sorry, Meryem!

That was just today. I am relaxing now, watched Tiger win the British Open, and I'm now watching the NASCAR race. If anyone want to visit South Florida, I have a spare room. I would suggest making it in the winter though!
