Web Hosting

This may not be the correct place for this topic, so if that's the case, I apologize.

Being a part-time playwright and a less than part-time filmmaker/videographer (just enough to interfere with my day job!), I'm looking to find a webhost to show what I can do and have done.

I don't think I would be uploading video (I assume that would make hosting VERY expensive). However, I would love to have video clips available, if possible! There will be mainly text files of scripts and jpegs of video that I would like to have shown on the site.

Any suggestions? Based on internet research, I came up with DOMINET.net . Any feedback on them? Anyone have a host that is reasonably inexpensive that they trust?

I appreciate any assistance.

Mark,

Another member, Jay Gladwell, recommended this host. I haven't investigated it thoroughly, but from the specs-at-a-glance it's worth checking out.

Thanks John. I've been doing research using a webhosting forum and they have quite a bit of info (if you can sort through the middle school blather and intermittant flaming). Here is a discussion about that host - and it wasn't very complimentary.

I registered to that site tonight to ask their opinion of a decent host, but the administrator must be sleeping and hasn't activated my account yet!

But thanks anyway. 5gbhosting looked good to me too!

Thanks for that info, Mark. It's worth looking into more, but in all honesty, at a first glance, I'd take the remarks with a grain of salt, too. The claims of stealing logos, plans, content, etc. are often targeted by people who don't realize that lots of companies purchase the same templates to use for their web sites...and that a lot of companies are actually owned by one umbrella company (thus similarities between different sites).

Search for the name of practically any ISP and you'll see it getting flamed somewhere. Like everything, it takes a bit deeper investigation than people's comments.

Oh, I agree with that 100%!

But that board has several thousand registered members, and the moderators (which are many!) seem to try to filter out any companies that do anything "bad" (like spamming, quoting prices and not abiding by the quotes, etc.).

That's why everytime the 5gbhost company is typed in on that site, it shows up with "****.com", as it's been banned on that board for some reason.

I've found two other webhosting companies by performing a search and reading the posts, that seem to be ok, but I'm going to ask questions specific to those companies on that board, as there are obviously quite a few people with more experience than I.

Of course, there is going to be good and bad with every company and who is a person to trust anyway!!??

I only thought that I would ask the question here (since there were probably several that had film/video websites) to get an opinion on a host, then ask the question there (who are deep into the webhosting thing) and see if I could 'cross-match' some anwers!

That's the best my inexperience will let me do!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

The 5gig site looks inviting, especially the price... but be warned: If it looks like too good of a deal, it probably is.

I use catalog.com for hosting on one of my sites. Nothing terribly cheap, or expensive, for that matter.

I think I'm paying about $400 a year for what services I need, and I am not near capacity on my use.

As a Realtor, when a customer clicks on a virtual tour, I need a virtual tour to appear... or the customer will look elsewhere.

Here's a tour I did with an inexpensive Panasonic camcorder:

The video and music tracks were done in Adobe Premiere and the audio voiceover and streaming video render was done in Vegas Video. If you have a high speed connection, it should fire right up for you.

My advice is to go month to month with a host until you are satisfied with the service... then pay yearly to save some cash.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the info Doug. I have sent an email asking questions to ADDACTION.net which had a good deal and some good customer reviews on the webhosting forum. Here is their website:

http://addaction.net/free.html

If they can answer my questions, I'll go with them. If not, then I'll keep looking and will definitely look at catalog.com.

Thanks for the info.

I have used playstream.com for hosting video clips and found them to be good and reasonably priced.

I use Interliant, but I think I'm going to move. I do not like sites that do not give me an option if I closing in on my download limits.

I ended up at ADDACTION.net and have been very pleased so far (still building the site). They have answered EVERY email I've sent and helped me tremendously. Of course, I'm still very much a novice in this!

Serious Problem with 5gbhosting.com

I heard of some good reviews of 5gbhosting.com so i signup with them on the windows2000 server that is Megawebserver.com, however the set of admin controls and ftp server user ID and passwords they sent me does not work.

I write serveral emails to them since a couple of days ago and there is no reply from them at all. I am from singapore, does anyone has their contact so i could call them? There is no contact number stated in their website.

I am really need to transfer my domain hosting very urgently becos i have a number of videos to load. ..

If anyone could advice me on this will be really great.

Many many thanks

Definitely stay away from 5gig. I have seen references to them in more than one place as thieves.
