Compatibility of Sony HDV codec across Sony models
My friend uses a HVR-Z1J HDV camcorder and is wondering if tapes created on this will be playable on all other Sonys - he's considering a second camcorder and also found the firewire port on his HVR-Z1J is busted.
Any tips appreciated Thanks in advance Kevin |
HDV is HDV just like DV is DV.

I use my HC5 to capture HDV shot on my Z1u. No problems.

Well the right way to state it is HDV2 is HDV2... HDV2 is Sony or Canon 1080i whereas HDV1 is JVC 720p. So yes all Sony HDV gear should play nice with each other. You can't mix HDV1 and HDV2, and care must be taken with Canon HDV as its 24p and 30p modes (called Frame modes) are not compatible with Sony. But all Sony HDV gear, no problem.

Thanks !
I did notice his tapes won't play on my Canon XH A1 |
Smaller HDV camera to use with HVR-Z1J HDV
As above my friend is also considering a smaller less expensive Sony as a second camera - I don't know the Sony line - in the $1000.00 or maybe less what are the recomendations ? It would have to play tapes made on the HVR-Z1J HDV and vice versa.
Thanks in advance Kevin |
HC7 (last years model) or HC9 are the best bets - both can be had under $1K, selling an HC9 myself right now in the classifieds... The 7 and 9 have better imagers and enough pro features to use as a second angle cam, or even a first in an emergency. Good complement to the Z1.
You could go cheaper and get a used HC3 or HC5 for a deck, but the PQ and features are much more limited, so you're really buying a deck, not so much a camera. I'd say spend a few $ extra and get the HC9 - still under the $1K mark, and it's nice and pro looking with the included lens hood and black finish. |
Thanks Dave - appreciate it !
