Newbie Question about Pal & Ntsc in HD

is there such thing as Pal or Ntsc cameras in HD?
or how do you distinguish between them?

Dave Blackhurst January 9th, 2009 03:15 AM

Yes, 50i PAL, 60i NTSC

Depending on the manufacturer there should be different part or model numbers between the different markets. Sony for instance typically adds an "E" at the end or shifts the model # one number... i.e. CX11= PAL model, CX12=NTSC

No, "PAL" and "NTSC" only refer to systems of colour subcarrier coding, and all HD cameras are component. The only things that are likely to be "PAL" or "NTSC" about HD cameras are any downconverted SD outputs.

There IS a difference between cameras meant for different areas in terms of framerates, but it's much more accurate to define them as "60Hz" and "50Hz" modes.

thanks for the replay,
it seems like there is cameras that can make 50&60 Hz, so that means that they can work on PAL and NTSC countries?

And so the everlasting saga continues. No compatability ever in sight? What a pain to film in PAL land and then deliver to NTSC customer! (or vice versa) Although I think the XL H1 can be factory modified to switch between both.

If all cams were to shoot at 300 frames we would not have this problem would we? Plus the added bonus of getting some real slo-mo material!

In the beginning when HDV was on the horizon I thought that finally there was a solution but it turned out to be just as confusing. Now that we don't have PAL/NTSC to worry about we have the 720p vs 1080i(p) dilemma.(on top of the 50/60Hz)

I gave up being a Diesel Mechanic for nearly the same reason: Witworth / UNC / Metric etc.

Maybe I should get into toiletpaper recycling!
