As I understand it, Sony licensed the DLP technology from Texas Instruments. They then came up with a scheme to take the square mirrors and cut them in half to double the resolution, then patented it. It should work, but they will be triangular pixels instead of square. It's kind of a cheat (like interlace), but may work a little better than DLP until something better comes along.

Where did you get your information about the triangular pixels? In the Sony information file of the projector they say each of the 3 SXRD imaging device has 4096*2160 pixels: http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Professiona...dprojector.pdf Anyway SXRD and DLP seem to me like two quite different technologies. In DLP projectors the image is built up by moving mirrors while with SXRD it is not. |
My source was a year or so ago from a former TI engineer. Maybe this is different technology, but I am skeptical about Sony claims. If true, I am looking forward to having this technology in my living room. The one I really enjoyed hearing about was HP "wobbulating" the DLP for 4k.

I am too skeptical about Sony claims. Especially about the contrast ratio of 2000:1. This is better than the contrast ratio of cinema DLP projectors. And this is one point where DLP projectors are very strong.
