Heres something to think about...

take the HVX200 using P2 concept... swap and transfer blah blah.. we all heard about it..
NOW..
XDCam HD F330 using blue ray right... so take that format and media... XD Cam at 35mbps, raw audio, variable frames blah blah

Now (thin outsiude teh box... ) Whip out ur PSP using UMD discs...

Look at what you got now..

Now imagine a Sony Handheld 1/3 CCD handycam, with 2/4 UMD slots BUT the UMD is BlueRay... at the moment i think a UMD stores 1.2gb... so UMD is about 1 4th of DVDr5
so a BluRay UMD would be about 6gb give or take, if we use that physical calculation of size vs capacity... now how much is a blu ray disc to buy?? theyre not THAT expensive... bout 80bux or so??? $80 for 6gb or 2grand for 4gb P2
umm.. ok that means i can buy 25 blu ray discs for the price of 1 P2 card. Blu Rays rewritable too so....
now break this down even further..
25 x blue ray umds @ 80bux each @ 6gb capacity = $2000 = 150gb recording
1x 4gb P2 @ $2000 each @ 4gb capacity = $2000= 4gb recording

Lifespan of the 2... P2 would win hands down, but at 80bux a pop, im happy to pay for a new disc when ones warn out..

now.. what sony have at their finger tips is a CHEAP solution which ALREADY EXISTS (in theory sorta) which allows for continued shooting, in a superior format to HDV (kinda) and did i mention cheap?

If sony were smart and they wanted to nail Panasonic by the gonads, then theyd seriosly need to look at something like this...

this might need to be thrown into area51, but the concept is a feasable one i think...

so noone else thinks this idea could be a reality???

Don Donatello January 24th, 2006 09:56 PM

maybe sony is/will looking outside the same box ?

The idea is certainly viable, but it couldn't be HDV. HDV is a tape format, as designed and spec'd. However, that's not to say that a new format couldn't be released, not using tape, that used the same or some advanced encoder that encodes to mpeg 2. I'd almost as soon see it have the option of J2K, mpeg 2, or mpeg 4 all on the same cam tho.

or that new XDCam HD thingy like the f330... ;)

High density discs, small hard drives, and flash memory will ensure that DV will become the last tape format devised.
