How was it editing the native m2t files as compared to transcoding to Canopus HQ for post work?

Would be interested in hearing your workflow and final delivery outlets.

When we shifted to HD several years back with the HD100, computers had a hard time with m2ts so I transcoded to HQ all footage before edit. When core 2 duos arrived, the timeline could "reasonably" handle the m2t's without transcoding to HQ, (cuts and with color correction, dissolves need to be rendered) I only transcode the clips that needed compositing in my older AE 6.5 which doesnt accept m2t.

Today, since I also have AVCHD h.264 from the canon 7D and a tiny sony cx100 i found it necessary to transcode to HQ even with core 2 quad.

I render HD master copies in HQ and archive that together with m2p for DVD authoring and WMV for web and HD projection.

I'm curious as to what your editing workstation configuration is.

Specifically - do you use a RAID array per Edius' recommendations for editing your Canopus HQ files? I"m running into a bottle neck someplace in my workflow and before I go thru the trouble of creating a RAID, I wanted to hear what your configuration is - also, are you do ing any field editing on a laptop and if so, what your experiences are editing in the file dan dwhat setup you have as well.

I only use a simple striped array for my hard drives installed internally before when computers during the time were slow.

Today I'm just using core 2 quad. I dont have arrays, just SATA drives.

2 gig ram.

so there's no issues then for you on using single SATA drives for editing?

Hmm - I'm editing with a Q6600 and 8GB RAM on my desktop and use a C2D with 4GB RAM on my laptop.

Maybe I just have to render clips when effects are added.

No issues for SATA drives 7200 rpm barracudas. I need to clarify that for m2ts from HD100/200 the videos are only 720P. I've experienced a slight bottle neck editing 1080i m2ts from our Sony HD1000. Those need trans coding.

But once they're transcoded, you go right on working with the single 7200RPM drive for editing?

I regularly edit 4 cam multicam. 2 tracks native HDV and two tracks HQ( converted from AVCHD). I run the HDV from seperate 7200 drives and the HQ from a 2 disc RAID 0. I have another drive dedicated to temp files. System is Q9450, 8G RAM, Vista 64. I have no bottleneck issues at all.

that is correct. Once transcoded, though big in size, HQ files become less compressed thus are easier on the system.
