Dumb question - Where's Pixlet?
 

I installed Panther and the Developer's Tools (4 discs) and can't find Pixlet...

Hey Heath -

Use the DVHS capture utility to bring in some footage. Now, you use the MPEGTXWRAP (go download it, if you don't have it) - to demux the video.

After that - use MPEG2DECX (go download this too) to convert to Pixlet. You won't see it unless you scroll up the "Quicktime" button in the program. So, you import the file you want to convert to Pixlet - don't forget to select it in the program. Then click on the "Quicktime" button. Now, you literally scroll up until you find Pixlet. It's way at the top.

Now you should be able to figure out the rest of it. However, as a side-note - I'm now seeing that my footage doesn't look so great. It's possible that I need to tweak some settings. Steve's production guides have lots of details (as does this forum) on getting maximum results from these programs. I highly suggest reading up on the tweaking. I'm in need of re-reading a lot of stuff because I don't think I'm getting the max benefit of the Pixlet just yet. I am aware that Steve's plugins are superior though. I'm just experimenting with everything like everyone else!

Another dumb question: where is the DVHS capture utility?

Also, Pixlet is a codec, right, or something similar? I would use that "format" of Pixlet to edit in FCP 3, correct?

I read in another post that DVHS was included in Panther. But, I downloaded it a long time ago from www.apple.com. I don't know where in Panther it would be....I already had it in my dock. (I have Panther too, but just never bothered to look for it in the applications or wherever it may be.)

Go to www.apple.com and look for "firewire sdk". It's the software development kit they have for free download. Once you get it...it's in there.

Yes Heath,

Pixlet is a codec that works with Quicktime (6.4). So it will work with any app that works with this version of Quicktime and FCP 3 does.

On a powerful enough machine, you should be able to edit with Pixlet realtime. You won't have RT FX and you can't view the footage realtime on an NTSC monitor but you'll be able to see frames on an NTSC or HD monitor for color correction.

Some people use another digital monitor with HD rez and put there canvas in it so they can watch there full rez HD while they edit.

I tried looking for Firewire SDK and DVHS in Panther under a search, but no luck.

Anyone else know? I'll start a new thread.

Heath, go to apple's site and look for "firewire sdk" it's there for a free download!!!!

Yes the DVHScap and VirtualDVHS apps didn't seem to come with Panther as expected, has anyone used the old versions under Panther succesfully, I haven't re-downloaded them yet.

Yes I have Paul. The latest download from Apple work just fine in Panther.
