An idea--can someone test it?
 

Anyone with an Apple with FCP 4, HD10 (or HD1) and DVHS can you try this idea out:

1. Shoot some stuff on the HD10.

2. Upconvert the HD10 footage to 1080i via the DVHS.

3. If it's possible, capture the DVHS/1080i footage and edit.

Let us know if it works. It may fail if capturing DVHS is impossible through FCP.

About one month ago I tried upconverting several clips from my HD1. However, I used 1080p with the Pixlet codec at Best Quality(100%). I dislike interlaceing, and have no current need for it.

When converting from MPEG to QuickTime .mov files on the Mac; the programs mpeg2decX, MM2C, and DiVA all provide a transform capability that I used to convert from 720p to 1080p.

That worked very well. Everything remained in the digital domain, thus maintaining high quality.

These 1080p .mov files also work well in FCP. As a test I dropped three .mov files into an FCP4 bin, made a matching sequence setting, copied portions from the three clips into the sequence and exported as:

FCP > File > Export > Using QT Conversion > Options > Settings > Pixlet Best Quality

The resulting .mov sequence acts just like the original .mov clips.

I burned these .mov files to a 'Data DVD-R' using Toast. The .mov files open in QuickTime Player directly from the DVD-R. You can drag the playhead to examin the contents, single frame or slowmotion forward or backward using the > & < keys.

Full speed playback requires sustained hard disk data rates of > 24 MB/sec.
