Heuris releases Xtractor HDV and XtoHD seperately.
 

Heuris is offering something for Final Cut Pro users that doesn't cost $5000.

But, my friends who use and abuse the HD10 and know HDV say Heuris is selling Xtractor (the tool to capture and I think demux HDV footage) as a Final Cut Pro plug-in for $199.

To go to DVHS, you need XtoHD, which costs $99.

Just so you know, you still can't go back to HDV (HD10) unless you pay $4785 for DTVHD. Unknown if we can go to DVHS yet, but I think we can go to 1080i. Which is something I'm going to try to edit HDV. Use the HD10 to go to 1080i on the DVHS, then capture in.

Those utilities don't seem to do anything more than the free Apple utilities, and the encoder is almost $5000! I think I'll have one of whatever it is they're drinking!

I am so friggin' tired of companies screwing us. They wonder why people hate buying new software - its because they charge so much for something that barely works or doesn't do exactly what we want it to...$5,000 to edit footage from a $2900 camera is insane.

Heath - I am very interested to hear how you make out with your 1080i sent back from the DVHS.

I saw this solution at DVExpo West. Heuris President was demoing it in the JVC boo0th.

The capture application is a rebadge of the Apple DVHS Cap utility. It does one thing differently and that is it converts in that app, and does not require you to use any of the shareware converts we are all so fond of finding new ones. It has the same interface and everything, it just has a different name.

What he then imported onto the timeline did not even play in real time, had a red render bar on top of it.

To export, you need to pay the big money - $47XX.00. then it will only go to a DVHS deck and not back to the camera, so add another $500-$1200 to that amount.

I, being the shy silent type, asked why the exporter was sooooo expensive. The answer was brilliant. "Because it is"

I said the capture app is a rebadged Apple utility and you can accomplish what his $200 package does with shareware.

He said I was insulting him.

Needless to say, we didn't get along after that.

I was trying to suggest he price it affordably to our user base.

He said our user base was not his target audiance.

I said it should be, but people who spend $3K or less on a camera are not going to buy a $5K software package.

He said the JVC camera is a problem.

I said, let me work with you, let me show it on the DVD and give people a trial, then price it so they can afford it. Give them a discount on the DVD like Cineform and Ulead.

He said no - now was not the time. Then he asked me to leave the booth (like he had the power - he did not)

I told him he was missing a great audiance and it was obvious he had no ability to learn from others. He said all I wanted was free software and that I was not his audiance.

Not his audiance eh? I own more HD gear than he has ever seen!

Anyway, that's my report from DVExpo West. Frankly, I got the impression he might lower the price in the new year, but I don't think I'm interested in working with him.

I tried calling to at least do a review. What they did to you is unbelievable. I'd call the home office; they're in St. Louis. I can't imagine someone being so down on customers.

I stopped by the JVC booth as well. Pretty weak. The guy there started asking *me* to show him how to set the camera on shutter control mode! He didn't know the camera had optical stabilizer either.
Dumb JVC should have had a 1280 x 720 DLP projector there showing the JVC image on a 5 foot screen.
Perhaps they decided not to push the camera, but I did see an ad for it in American Cinematographer, I think.

They're advertising in Movie Maker, etc., all over the place. Even rental houses are displaying it prominently in their ads.
