Dell for HD Editing

I am planning to get a Dell Studio Desktop Computer with the following specs

- Intel Core 2 Quad Processor
- Windows vista ( 64 bit)
- 6G Memory, 1TB Hard Drive
- ATI Radeon HD 4350 (512MB) Graphics Card

I am installing Adobe Premiere Elements 7 for editing. Would this set-up be enough?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Noel,

I don't use Premiere, so take it for what it's worth, but I would get a 1gb graphics card. If nVidia is one of your choices, I would consider that. They are doing some ground breaking things to speed up the HD process.

Couple of comments...

1. You're going to want more than 1 HD. Minimum of 2, 3 is preferable.
2. Get as much RAM as you can afford
3. Ditto on the nVidia graphics card.
4. If you can wait, get Windows 7 instead and get the disk.

Do a CLEAN install of the OS. If this machine is for editing video, then do not install ANYTHING other than what you need to do that, and maybe a web browser so you can download updates and tools. NOTHING else. Keep the network cable unplugged from it unless you need to download something from the internet, or register your software.

This should save you so many headaches, it's not funny.

Thank you Mark & Perrone. I will switch to the NVIDIA GT220 ( 1024MB) then. I'll also take your advice about adding another hard drive & not install anything else not related to editing.

Basically I am editing on native HDV, so hope this works.

Hey Noel,

You might want to check out some reviews and benchmarks of the core i5, which is officially due out next week, but is unofficially already available. The core i5, and especially the core i7 should have better performance over the core 2 duo.

Something to muddy the waters, anyway...

Thanks Vito.

Now I am torn between this two Dell

i7 with an ATI Radeon HD4870 (1024 MB)

or

Intel Core 2 Quad with the NVIDIA GT220 (1024MB).

Any advice before I flip a coin and order?

What are you editing with? If you use Vegas, check out this thread:

There's quite a bit of discussion about it on DVINFO if you search around.

Personally, I wouldn't get a core 2 duo right now with these better performing cpu's out. If you can afford it, go core i7.

Of course, if you take my advice, and it blows up your living room and all your wedding videos melt, it's not my fault...

Hey Vito, I am planning to install Adobe Premiere Elements 7. After reading that thread about the i7 I will go for that system. Now I have a PC that can edit HD, all I need is an HD Camera, one step at a time.

Thanks a lot people.

Let us know how it goes, Noel. I'm dying to get a core i7 system myself. Not long now...

I second this. Stay off the web! Also, avoid using it for gaming.

I just bought a similar system from Dell. http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/non-linea...my-new-pc.html

Windows 7 upgrade is included with any Dell purchase now.
