DVFilmmaker OSX with HDV - triplesize?
 

Hey all,

I am trying to edit a film. shot 60i hdv. i want to get it to 24p before cutting. when i convert a clip with dvfilmmaker, it jumps significantly in size. 100megs to 250megs or so. Am i doing something wrong? is this just the way it is? I would contact dvfilm about this, but i only get ONE free tech support email... ad id hate to waste it on a confirmation such as this one.

any help greatly appreciated.

I do not know about dvfilmaker but if what you are doing is converting the native .m2t file that is recorded to tape to another format then the answer is no you are not doing anything wrong....m2t is a highly compressed long GOP format that most who edit it use an intermediate which knocks the compression down so bigger files are expected. The intermediate I use is Canopus HQ and it is around 4x the size of native hdv but it is making 60i so for deinterlacing and making 24p that sounds right.

Which codec did you output to?

Actually it sounds like you've still got quite a lot of compression on there. Normally if you're editing from 24p converted material, you'd be looking at going to uncompressed, which would but probably x100 the file size! Anyway, you could choose DVCpro1080i (although your stream will be progressive from DV Film Maker).

In this case the final file size will be x4 of the original. DV Film maker is not converting the original file - it's outputting a new file that has been de-interlaced and re-compressed.

I use DV FilmMaker and it sounds right. As noted before, you are creatig a new file, which is not only deinterlaced, but time remapped to 24P and the resulting file is bigger than the original.
