URGENT: Attaching crane to tripod and camera to crane

Hi There,

I just purchased a 10ft crane, and where there is a hole for the tripod there is a big hole, that a screw cannot screw into, and where the camera is to be connected there is only a hole....

here is a picture of my crane...

Looks like a rather poorly designed and constructed crane. Given the size, you'll need a 150 mm bowl tripod to mount the crane onto or something similar. If you've enough time, you could make a circular plate with a central threaded stud that you could bolt on using the two holes in what I assume is base plate and use that to mount onto the supporting tripod.

However, you might have to improvise a stable base in the short term that you can bolt your crane onto. Perhaps you could check out your local DIY store and see if one of their small portable workbenches could be used with sandbags. You could drill holes into the workbench to match the holes in the base of the crane and bolt the crane onto the workbench.

Jib cranes usually have a bowl (75mm, 100mm or 150mm) so that you can level the camera's tripod head, so you'll have to order one from the manufacturer. Short term you might be able to mount a head with a suitable piece of plastic piping and use the central stud in the head's bowl into the hole for the camera.

Hi Pat.....

That thing doesn't look like it was designed for tripod mounting at all - surely when you bought it you enquired just what bits and pieces were required to use it that way, if indeed it was possible?

I'd say it was designed (?) to be bolted to a proprietry stand, not a tripod.

I suggest going back to the drawing board (or at least whence it came) and finding out what THEY say you should do.

You don't say what sort of hole is provided for the camera mount. Is it to take a half ball head? Flat base with 3/8th" bolt? What?

I agree with Brian, that is one rough looking piece of kit. Can't see you using it tomorrow somehow.

yeahhh.

It's meant for an ITE Tripod but when I purchased it they man said that he used a 501 head or a very similar head to mount it.

It's kind of bizarre.

If you have the 501plong plate you can indeed use this tripod on a 501 head. You may need to use 3/8th pan head head bolts and nuts to secure it but it can be done, I wouldn't do it but you can. Good Luck, Charles.
