Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
What's other users opinion on the ls300 supplied shotgun mike? I just compared to my at897 and the ls300 stock mike sounds pretty bad in comparison, it's bad enough for me to replace it with my at897 which has a much fuller sound, with the ls300 stock mike it sounds like I am speaking into a tin can. The at897 is only twice as long which is a bit of an issue but I can live with that considering the audio quality gain.

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Hello Noa,
i have the GY HM200 and my shotgun is the Rode NTG1. Good sound pretty good.... Regards Andreas |
Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Did that mike come with the camera? The standard mike on the ls300 doesn't have any markings on it so it's jvc own brand.

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Noa: The mic that came with the 300 is totally useless IMHO. I have an old Audio Technica short shotgun that I bought in 1998 (don't remember the # but similar ones are still about $250). It has served as a nose mic on about 15 cameras over the years. It's now on the LS300, and in most situations is indistinguishable from my 416.
I'd buy a rugged, decent quality, affordable mic and keep it forever. - BTW, I also have an NTG-1 and an NTG-3, which are both decent (the 3 far better that the 1) but think they're a little thick and bulky - also, they suffer badly from handling noise, especially the 1, which is an issue on camera... The Audio Technica is slim, like the 416, quiet and slightly shorter than the Rodes. |
Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Good to know I was not dreaming :) didn't expect it to be that bad though. For the time being I"ll continue working with the at895, if the size becomes a problem I"ll buy a new but shorter shotgun.

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
I knew it wouldn't be good, but thought I'd keep in my case for emergencies. It's so bad though that I gave it to my dog to play with - he's a terrier, it's history.

I hope you didn't make the dog sick!

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
No worries, he has the constitution of a pig...
As for the subject - over my 45+ years of filmmaking I've bought cheap microphones several times, mainly to have as backups or rain/fishing boat mics... I've always ended up regretting it. The $250 bottom limit is a good guideline... |
Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
I keep some old Sony shotguns that came with their DV and HDV cameras around, they still work and have decent quality.
My question is about the sound isolation on the LS300, does camera handling come thru the microphone like on the other small form pro JVC cameras? I use an isolation mount on the HM600 as the camera clamp doesn't isolate the mic enough but vibration still travels thru the XLR connector. |
Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
William: The LS300 is pretty good, actually.. better than the C100. I've been shooting a lot of B roll this week using the nose mic, and the only handling noise is from the rocker (zooming the VSM) - which to be honest is more my fumbling than a fault with the camera..
Which brings up the question again - please JVC.. Is it possible with a firmware update to make the remote port usable for control of the VSM? |

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Craig. Are we going to see a 120fps update soon too?
|
Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
The 120fps is on our workbench as well.

Re: Jvc gy ls300 standard shotgun mike
Can someone confirm that we are talking about the JVC QAN0067-003 Microphone for ProHD/4KCAM Camcorder, which came "free" with my HM170UA:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/fre...esFree&print=Y It is backordered until some time in February, but if everyone says it's not worth waiting for it, I will go ahead and purchase another shotgun mike. |
