New Firmware 2016 for LS300

apparently there's a new firmware coming next week at InterBEE 2016 in Tokyo :)

Good to see JVC has not forgotten about this camera.

Great news!

I read that it adds some additional HDMI output resolutions. Is that all we can expect?

Nice find - can anyone confirm what the firmware is?

Nothing about it on JVC's website that I could find...

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Picked up this on a site : GY-LS300CHは4K/60p出力が可能になるファームアップを

and I can read 4K/60p, which is a serious upgrade, or what do you say?

In a JVC news info they also had the phrase 4K HDR - interesting.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

It's seems like we can pay for an upgrade, and record 4k60p via HDMI into an external recorder.

Here's Google Translate of a webpage I just found:

GY - LS 300 CH can upgrade to 4K / 60p Firm - up
GY-LS300CH plans to upgrade the firmware corresponding to 4K / 60p output from HDMI with a lens replacement type camera of MFT mount equipped with a Super 35 sensor. Although it does not correspond to the internal record, 4 K / 60 p recording is possible by combining with Atmos' SHOGUN INFERNO, for example. An external recorder is necessary but it is cheaper than Sony FS 7 even if both are added. On SHOGUN INFERNO side, it corresponds to REC trigger and interlocking recording is possible. The firmware is said to be paid for.

Perhaps while they are at they could squeeze in 1080p at 240fps too. After all, a full sensor 4k readout at 60p kind of equates to 1/4 sensor resolution readout at 240p right? (I expect my understanding of sensors is completely wrong though)

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

They have reached the maximum SD card write capasity and using Atomos external 4K recorder will add that and a few interesting color support abilities. HDR and possibly instant JVC Log and so on. Might be time to replace the old Atomos Ninja 2.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

FYI 150Mb/s is only 19MB/s (even my cheap SDXC cards are rated to 60MB/s)

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Still the LS300 does not like certain makes of SD cards, even if the same cards work on other cams at 200mbps!

Which brands don't work?

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Samsung Pro 64GB which are rated U3 and can write up to 80Mbytes/sec don't work with LS300 with 170mbps. They work on the GH4 with 200mbps. Sandisk Ultra 80Mb/s do not work too.

I now use sandisc extreme pro 95mbs cards which have worked fine so far.

Same - very happy with both the Extreme and Extreme Pro line.

We started using Extreme Pro series cards with the AF100 and many of those have lasted a great number of years.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

I wonder when we'll hear more about the new firmware?
It would be amazing if it also gave us a 10bit 1080p output!

Jim Nogueira November 20th, 2016 05:53 PM

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

With 10 bit 1080p output, I bet sales of the camera would triple!

I'd buy a second one for sure!

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Yup. It's just 4k60p with low chroma sampling. No other improvements.
All my work ends up in 1080/25p, and I rarely use 4k so this is of no use to me.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Did not catch the details from the german reporter. When you say low chroma, less than 4.2.2, or less than 4.2.0?

Duncan Craig November 27th, 2016 05:27 AM

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

We'll have to wait to the proper release to find out exactly what the firmware does, from what I gather via Facebook some assistance functions are disabled when running at 4k60p.

That German reporter said a lot and actually almost nothing, the only relevant info he gave was that the camera can output 4k 50p or 60p to a external recorder only and that it's going to be a free update, he also mentions that HDR is possible.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

I understand the 4k/50/60p was presented in relation with Atomos Shogun Inferno. The Hdr is an Atomos feature, and their recorder offer a lot of tools - so it might not be critical if some are gone on the Ls300.

Steve Mullen November 30th, 2016 05:57 PM

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

The JVC sensor has been capable of 60p output. Now we know much of the signal processing logic is also 60p capable. I expect some of the data displayed/used at p30 must not be able to be computed at 60p.

I doubt the data path is 10-bits wide.

The question is, like 1080p60, what does one do with 2160p60 since p60 -- except for 720p60 -- is not of much value in a world where so much content is streamed. Today, 2160p24/p30 is the norm.

Of course, 60p can be used to provide a bit more than 2X slo-mo with a 24p timeline. But the 1/120th shutter speed is far different than 1/48th. With the clarity of 4K one would need experiment with the 60p shutter speed and the rate movement in the scene.

Did he say "500" when pointing to the camera with the huge lens?

Lee Powell November 30th, 2016 10:23 PM

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

4K at 60p would produce some fabulous slo-mo footage. No need to shoot at 1/120 sec shutter. 1/60 will look just as good and give you more light to work with.

Re: New Firmware 2016 for LS300

Just adding my 2 cents to this thread, FOR SURE it is 8bit 4:2:0 4K 60p because that's the only chroma subsampling supported by current HDMI 2.0 sender chips for camcorders. We have to wait for HDMI 2.1 or for cameras to support Displayport before 10bit 4:2:2 4K 60p is possible. HDMI is holding up the industry for better chroma subsampling and higher bit depths.
