I'm going to go have have a look at the consumer version today. I'm going to see if the staff will hook it with a WS TV.

All the info about the PAL version is on the front page of the JVC UK website.

It's called GR-PD1 and... isn't HD capable. But it shoots in PAL, 576p25, 576p50, in 16:9 mode of course.

Thanks Steven. Shame about the lack of HD :( That essentially makes it a 1 chip progressive scan SD camcorder, which means the DVX100 could have it for breakfast.

Hey guys,
just to let you know, i am using a japanese HD 1 in sydney as a second camera to film camera's for international commercials. I either upconvert to 1080 and put it through a AJA analogue HD to HD SDI convertor and record to HDCAM or D5 deck, or have found that using a playstation D terminal to component cable i can downconvert to SD and record component in to a digi beta deck and it is sharper than 16mm telecined in ursa.. That fact it ain't PAL and can't use FCp is boring but the alcamist platinum transfers it clean to PAL, so picks up of products for my latest sony commercial worked fine in post and the cost saving on film camera, crew, stock, process, telecine etc paid for the camera many times over.. I love it..
p.s Feature DOP's mates now all want to borrow it to shoot shorts, indi films..

Not so fast!

First the DVX100 isn't native 16:9. The JVC is.

The JVC has lower edge-enhancement.

The DVX100 is NTSC. The JVC HD/SD is not. That's a huge positive difference.

The JVC is progressive at 50fps while the DVX100 is interlace at 60.

anyone getting any good stuff from the DV version? I've yet to look at my video shot outside, but I think it will be a little shakey (my friend shot, I wore a wireless for the interview...something cool for the doc on my DVD).

Not where I live (I live in England Steve :)), so I get the PAL DVX100 which is progressive at 25 fps. And with all that extra image control and lattitude I think I'd only miss the 16:9.

Didn't the BBC have a better quality broadcast standard prier to the switch to PAL?

Gosh, I don't know Frank. That would be pre 1967? I'm not sure they ever broadcasted in a higher spec format than PAL (they recorded stuff on Vera and Ampex systems at that time I think).

Technical summary from JVC

Multi-Format Recording and Playback:

MPEG-2 PAL Progressive -- 16:9 625/50p (same as NTSC SD mode)

MPEG-2 PAL Progressive -- 16:9 625/25p (same as NTSC SD mode; but at a rate perfect for xfer to film using native 16:9!)

MPEG-2 PAL Progressive -- 4:3 625/50p (For making PAL progressive DVDs?)

DV PAL Interlace -- 4:3 625/50i (same as DV NTSC mode)

But who knows if it is tuned for minimum edge enhancement!
