Panning with 24p
 

Last weekend I did some initial shooting at an archeological site using 24p for the first time to see if I like it. As a relative new user to 110U I was stunned on how nice most of my shots turned out, with the exception of my panning shots.

I panned at what i thought was an incrediably slow pace, but still saw jitters on replay. I was shooting in the fully auto mode on a stable tripod.

Are there any manual settings I should be using or should I just forget it and jump to 30?

Hi Jon,

It is normal behavior of progressive video and 24P. If you do a search on this forum you will bump into posts were they describe this effect, and how to deal with it.
You either pan slowly or fast. Here is a document which explains it more.
Once you read it, looking at a movie in the cinema will never be the same...

If you reckon the JVC is bad you should try it with a DVX which has no motion smoothing!!

Personally I think the DVX is the perfect tool to learn shooting in progressive on because nothing else come close to it's filmic cadence in the sub $7,000 camcorder range. Even my Canon A1's 25f frame mode is forgiving with panning movement, lest I start slowing footage down.
