Tip for avoiding Firewire board cooking

I just got one of those unenergizing firewire cables. It occurred to me it might be a good habit to set the firewire switch to DV anytime you hook up to it. It seems a lot of people fry the HDV side but the DV side remains functioning. Seems to me, if I had to chose, I'd rather have the HDV capability than DV only. So why not, set it to DV anytime you hook up. Hate to get stuck with DV only. It's so 1998.

Manual says to have both devices off (or the JVC unhooked and off) when changing the switch. Though I had it on and hooked up when I hit the switch the other day, nothing fried. Not saying I'd do it again though.

Brian, changing the switch while beeing hooked up can blow your port! As it are two different circuits. The HDV/DV selection is not software switch.

I leave it on DV all the time, because the deck has a habit of trying to
playback a DV tapes as HDV first then it switches to DV when it senses the signal from the tape.

this is annoying because you then wait 8 seconds from pressing to play to seeing anything. So putting it on DV avoids that. :)

What if both units are off can the switch still blow?
