DR-HD/FCP6 problems, anyone else?
 

So I just starting using the DR-HD100 firestore. I shot a jazz concert using HDV30p and am having issues with the editing. When I try to output on my macbook pro using FCP6.0.6 The computer keeps crashing. I am using quicktime conversion and it gets about 13% done and crashes, also takes foreverrr. I think I have a decent system for editing, I didnt think the HD footage would suck this much power and RAM to do this. Any one else have a better workflow idea. Any help, would be awesome!

Are you recording the video as Quicktime or M2T on the DR HD100?

Which MacBookPro are you using?

What version of FCP are you using?

What is your external media drive on the Mac formatted as?

I use a WD passport drive, not sure what its formatted as though, where would I find that?

Your MacBook Pro computer should be fine, but for future reference if you click on the Apple symbol in the extreme top left of the menu bar and then select "About This Mac" it will tell you the exact specs of your computer.

WD Passport drives are mostly only 5600rpm. Most are also only USB connectable. Neither of these situations are really suitable for FCP. Most of these drives are also FAT2 formatted (for PCs) which limits the size of an individual file it can store to 2Gbs. Which drive do you have?

You can check the format of your drive by using Disc Utility, which you'll find in the "Utilities" folder which is in the "Applications" folder. Select your WD Passport drive and under the "Erase" tab it will tell you what the "Volume Format" is. It should be "Mac Extended". What is yours formatted as?

i just checked its MS-DOS files system FAT 32, i see i can change it, will i still be able to connect the drive to a pc though? thanks

Be sure to back up your files if you reformat, the drive will be erased.

You probably won't be able to use the drive on a PC after reformatting.

I also assume it's a USB drive, this is also not recommended for Final Cut Pro, you need at least a Firewire 400.
