Happy HD100 owner
 

Hi every body, I am new to this forum but I am glad I am in. First I want to thank Tim Dashwood for so many tips and advises. Thanks to his clear answers about JVC HD-100 I bought 2 of these cameras and in the market for one more. I love this camera! Picture quality awesome! Previously I had 2 XL1s's (do not even mention) :)... I started to tape weddings 4 years ago and right now planning to shoot some short (20 min) movie, just to shift from weddings. I am also thinking about going to school (Art Institute of Seattle) here in WA but I heard that they are "sucks". I do realy want to learn how to make pro video and films. If any of you have any sugestions, I appritiate.

Does any one knows why my LCD on HD-100 is a little on the magenta side color? How do I calibrate it (if it is possible at all).

I am not sure if the Art Institute "sucks" or not. I think any school is only as good as what you make of it. A good friend of mine went to the Art Institute in Seattle and for an internship he worked as an editor on "Bill Nye the Science Guy" not bad for a college internship. He now works for the largest architectual company in the world as a video producer. So I think that if you have some talent and a lot of drive then you can make college a successful experience.

You may find the main benefit of "film school" are the contacts you make. There are many basic techniques to shooting, editing, lighting, etc. One could argue that basics can be tought with decent results at most film (art) schools but it's who you end up at school with that can really make or break your career. Remember, Lucas, Coppola, Zemeckis, Spielberg all started this way (way back when).

Andrey, Thanks for more positive feedback on the JVC Gy 100. I am coming to Texas from Africa to pick one up (perhaps two) the 1st of June. I'm salivating. Tim, you may not realize it but you have made a huge impact on my knowledge and excitement about this camera. Chris as a new shooter to the forum I also add my thanks for what has become a great connection, perhaps a Shiner when I pass by San Marcos.

I borrowed the hd101 im currently looking at purchasing last night from my local specialist store (they let me walk out of the store with it without even giving them credit card details or any sort of collateral which I thought was good of them, guess I’ve spent enough money there by now though..)

Set it up on my tripod and played with cam settings.. Wow there’s a lot. Finally found the sort of picture i was looking for and it really blew me away. I was also lucky (or unlucky, which ever way you look at it) to see the SSE happen, and it wasn't too bad. I was testing the camera in low light conditions and then I turned the camera back into the light, which was behind me (nothing to bright) and then back into the dark and saw the SSE then.

Right, time to sort out my finances, I love this camera already and i don’t even own one.

Adding my welcome too. There's a wealth of information here and the people are incredible. I too had some magenta problems and actually colors in general. Following Tim Dashwood' advice on colors and Paolo I think his name is, my JVCs are preforming outstanding. Paolo posted some settings and I looked for them for you but I can't find the post. If you can find them though, set your camera to his second set of settings and the difference is great. No more magenta. Remember, all cameras are different so fiddle with the settings until you get exactly what your eye likes in your cameras. Also, Jonathan Ames is producing "2nd Unit" just for the internet that's going to focus on his company's production of a netwotrk television show they're doing. They replaced their regular Sony 950s for a whole shoot with all JVC100HDs and are supposed to be showing how well the cameras perform and how they were used in a network production. I know alot of people are waiting for it, me included considering I just bought another 100HD bringing my total to 2. I and my two friends have been at a studio (name withheld until we leave!!!) for 13 years and we're going out on our own. Together we have 4 100HDs and a plan for our own production company. It's people like the ones you find here with advice you can rely on that makes the move a lot less scarry. Anyway, welcome.

Hey Joyce. The settings you're referring to are at http://www.paolociccone.com/hd100-calibration-2.html. We tried them and they'ree pretty good but as you said, everyone's cameras and your eyes are different but these are a good starting point. I'd also highly recommend getting and using a CamAlign Front Box HD Standard (www.dsclabs.com) and for the least expensive route, pair it with a DV Rack and HD component (http://www.seriousmagic.com/dvrack.cfm). For the novice it's a little daunting to understand but it's an understanding you have to have, in my humble opinion, if you're going after accurate, dependable results. And thanks for the 2nd Unit plug. I had lunch today with Rob Kositchek, the Cinematographer and USC Film School prof. I introduced you to at HDExpo and he's really excited about the chance to help the indie community through 2nd Unit. That makes 2 with George Dibie on board as well. Hopefully we'll begin posting footage this weekend.

Thanks for the offer but we're starting out just the three of us for now. I've been doing makeup for years and slowly building a company on the side for the last 2 years creating and providing quality make up to the studio industry. We started offering it to the general public a few months ago and the company's really taken off. So my two girl friends, one in camera and one in sound have pooled our money and resources and are striking out on our own to produce commercials.
