HD100/101 Users in the UK??

I know a few of you guys but I thought this may be a good place to see who's using the HD100/101 in the UK.

One of my reasons for wanting to know is that I need to rent the 13x lens if anyone has one...????

Please introduce yourself and what your doing with the camera.

I use mine for all sorts. I am yet to use HD yet but that is not the main reason why I choose this camera.

Fellow UK 101 user

Hi Mike,

Funny you should write about other UK 101 users as I saw your name yesterday and thought the same thing. I make broadcast documentaries for the BBC (and others), have done so for 13 years, own a Sony DSR 450, Sound Devices sound rig and now a JVC 101 with a DR HD100 disk recorder.
I am interested in high quality 1/3 or 1/2 inch lenses, and whether AVID will support 25p on Xpress pro.

Live in Watford for my sins

Regards,

Geoffrey Smith

Hi Guys - We are up in Scotland, just outside Edinburgh, have been using the HD101 for about 6 months now... great little camera. We are in the process of producing 2 broadcast Docs with it at the moment. Don't have the 13x lens at the moment but looking to get something depending on what's going on at NAB. Wish Apple would get this 25p issue sorted out sooner rather than later.

Hey Geoffrey - where did you get the DR HD100 - we have had one on order for months and our dealer says there is still no sign of them. Have you had any software issues with the camera with it?

Stewart,

Yes I wish AVID would do the same with 25p support. I do think there are some politics with all this, it is murky to say the least.
I got my DR HD100 from Mitcorp in West London. I can enquire about another one if you wish?
Like you I am also waiting to see what happens with lens. I have not used mine in anger yet but I have doubts about it..

How did you rate Mitcorp Geoffrey? I am planning to order a steadicam from them tomorrow morning.

Geoffrey Smith April 26th, 2006 01:49 PM

I find them very good, but I only deal with one guy called Darren Simpson . He has looked after me very well over the years, so ask for him and mention my name.

Best,

Geoffrey

Hi,
I have the HD101 and its great - I would also like to find someone in the Uk who owns/rents the wide lens but so far no joy, I've even spoken to the nice JVC rep who told me he is trying to get a hire co. to buy a wide lens but so far no takers. P.S. I also demo'd the wide adaptor that JVC was offering - total crap! (imho) It claims to be 20% wider but the image looks almost the same with the adaptor on as it does with the adaptor off!

Mike Marriage April 26th, 2006 01:58 PM

Maybe I could buy it and hire it out if there is demand...??

Day rate would be about £100.

Geoffrey Smith April 26th, 2006 03:08 PM

Paul,

I have the wide angle adaptor (thrown in when I bought my 101), and its 0.8x will give you about 4.5mm. Although not obviously as wide as the 3.5mm , I find its extra width useable. As regards quality, DV Solutions here at the BBC have tested the adaptor and don't find it bad at all, but as with most things there are variables with what was shot and what it is being compared to etc etc.

I recently spoke with the people at Optical support in London (lens specialists), and are trying to organsise a proper comparision. That won't be easy if none of us can get a 3.5mm lens however, and one would also have to have a a 2/3" adaptor before we could use a broadcast 2/3" lens like a J9 or the newer J17. Was hoping that the new 1/2" HD XDCAM from Sony might prompt Canon and Fuijinon into some good 1/2" HD lens, and although they appear on the XDCAM pamphlet, no one seems to have seen them at NAB. (Hope to be proved wrong on that last point!).

Geoffrey

Thanks for that Geoffrey, I see the chap you deal with is Darren Simpson. Do you have an email contact for him? Have you had any issues with the DRHD100?, any software upgrades needed on your camera as with all the folks in the US with the "A" upgrade?.

Thanks for your help...

Hi from Spot-On-Sound Ltd

We have a 101E that is part of our growing Hire dept in Norfolk, other lenses are planned to be bought for hire, our 101 comes with PAG cells and next on the list will be the DR-HD100 drive, we used to be mainly a Audio company through my father and owner of Spot based on 30+ years with the BBC but as well as still offering film and TV/corporate audio services we also rent other gear including a jib arm, Sony PDX10 etc.

Hi Ian,

Where in Norfolk? Are you getting the 13x lens?

Ian Savage April 27th, 2006 03:45 PM

The plan is to get the 13x lens especially if there is some call for it with UK users of the 100/101(and onwards).

We are up near Fakenham in Norfolk, right between Norwich and Kings Lynn.

You're quite far from me, but I'd definitely be interested in renting the lens. Is there a way to avoid the 2 hour drive? Courier maybe?

Ian Savage April 28th, 2006 09:27 AM

Courier would be possible as I'd supply a seperate lens in a Peli case anyways, if the hire was more than a day then delivery at a sensible price would also be an option and a little safer for the lens.
