Rodney Charters chose HD110 -- but for what?
 

In a full page ad for JVC ProHD on the back cover of eventDV magazine, Rodney Charters is quoted saying:

" ... We tested many small HD cameras and chose JVC's GY-HD110U because it's a true 24p camera with interchangeable lenses...."

The article I read involving Rodney Charters a long while back was with the HD100 camera. Has he done new testing with the HD110?

Also, as the quote says, we "chose" the JVC GY-HD110U. Does anyone know for _what_ "they" chose the camera? In the article I read they were testing cameras for a replacement of the PD150s they used to shoot backgrounds for process shots. Is this still the use? Are GY-HD110s currently being used in production this year on "24"?

Finally, I assume Rodney Charters is being paid a huge endorsement fee for use of his picture and quotes in the JVC ads. Is there any reason not to assume this?

The crew of "24" has the GY-HD110U and is using it for backgrounds, for the next season's shows.

Really, that is AWESOME!!! I am a HUGE 24 fan and that seems so cool. Carters also chose the HD100 out of all the new HD cams when they had the shootout so it is not some mindless endorsement.

Yea, I'm a big fan of "24" also. I get together with a friend on Monday nights when it airs to watch it. It's going to be great next season to be able to say "hey, that's video shot with our camera!"

You guys might be interested to know that Fox Sports Net North currently owns an HD100 and has been using it to shoot sports highlights and interviews. They're buying three HD250s as well.

The Real Deal
 

24 is using HD100's and HD110's to shoot plates for use on the show, of which are scenes used in the faux newscasts. These plates will also be used for video playout in the CTU.

In addition, the HD100 will have a cameo in an upcoming episode.

For those interested, the footage is ingested into Avid via a BR-HD50U connected FireWire to a Miranda HDV Bridge+ and converted to D5.

Finally, Rodney was not provided any compensation for his endorsement of the GY-HD100U, nor has anyone else featured in our ProHD ads or on the JVC web site this past year. He genuinely likes the camera and to this day a supporter of ProHD, I'm pleased to say.

Hi Jiri

The Miranda box is a HDV-HDSDI baseband converter, so they'll be capturing the footage into MC Adrenaline (with the DNx HD board) or Symphony Nitris or possibly DS Nitris. You can do this into a 720p/24 project or via cross-conversion into 1080p or 1080i (effectively PsF). You can capture regular DNx flavours into MCA and Symphony Nitris adds uncompressed HD - for serious bucks. This is the method we'll be using for our next online from footage shot on the HD100. It's no help if you're using AXPro or MC Soft with Mojo because there is no baseband HD-SDI input. There is still no native support for HDV1 at 24 or 25fps in any Avid product except Liquid.
