Shutter - 1/30th v. 1/60th @ 30p
 

I've been shooting for some time with my HD110 at 30p with "no shutter" which defaults to 1/60th. Recently I had a few instances where I needed a bit more light and I switched the shutter to 1/30th for a quick fix. The footage seemed fine to me although there wasn't any very fast movement in the frame.

Theoretically I guess a 1/30th shutter should look "normal" (whatever that is) and not "processed" if the frame rate is 30 fps, right? Although I guess it's not going to give the same effect as a 180 degree shutter in a film camera so maybe it will look strange in certain circumstances.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

On my HD-100, I find 1/60th OK for motion, but has a somewhat sharp stutter effect. If I use 1/30th, and there is any motion, the blurring effect to my eye is too great; not as bad as the "motion smoothing" feature, but still too much. I wish we could shoot at 30p and be able to select 1/48th, the equivalent I think, of a 180 degree shutter. Would be a good compromise on the motion blur: just enough to smooth out the stutter, not too much blur, and about a half stop more light.

Boy, that sounds like a simple firmware upgrade, maybe we could do it like the upgrade we did on the BR-HD50. Painless.

I'd even pay a nominal fee for such an upgrade, especially if it included a white shading feature.

Oh heck, while we're at it, why not include the super-encoder and 60p? I'd eeven pay a little more.

Gary, do you mean a setting that prevents white shading when the iris is open all the way?
As far as I know thats built into every HD camera out there except the JVC.

I'd like that as well.

There shouldn't be any issues with an iris all the way open.

Does the HD200/250 have white shading at iris open?

I believe it has been posted in this forum that the new cameras, the HD200/S50 have a white shading adjustment feature to deal with this issue.
