Have you guys tried off-brand batteries for HM 100?

With the 2190mah JVC battery at $100USD in Hong Kong, have you guys tried off brand batteries such as this one offered on ebay? Should I go for it?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have 4 original and 2 of these: PriceGrabber.com. I saw no difference in performance. When you run phantom power you get about 90 minutes out of all of them.

Thanks Robert for the feedback. I just found a 2400 mah battery replacement in Hong Kong for $38USD, hopefully it will be decent. I may eventually try the 3000mah on ebay, but don't feel like overseas shipping if the 2400mah works okay.

Thanks again.

I bought two of these and have had no problems at all. They show up looking the same in the battery pie chart in the menu. I am getting the same one and a half hours with them that I'm getting with the original.
I bought them with a coupon code (sncoff20) that lowered the price to $72.00 with shipping.

Bought the battery form the ebay posting that you mentioned. Received it and charged overnight. The nexr morning used the battery and it discharged in 30 minutes.
Not worth the effort of cost.

Tracy, try discharging / recharging the battery a couple of times, if that doesn't improve the performance, its probably duff cells.

Sam Young September 30th, 2009 08:41 AM

The batteries from my ebay link are definitely duff. I have charged and discharged the batteries, and the camera states 40 minutes max.

So I bought two more 2400mah off brand ones in Hong Kong, they are stated at 120 minutes. I should have just ordered more working 2400mah cells in Hong Kong... 3000mah my buttox.

These batteries work as original 100%- I get exactly the same times as from JVC.

Reliable Batteries

Hi all,

Anyone have a good source of reliable but economical replacement batteries for the HM100 in the United Kingdom? I understand that better larger sources of power like the Anton Bauer solutions are available, but I need the same form factor as the original batteries, without the 100 quid cost!

I read somewhere that 3rd party replacement batteries for the BN-VF823U unit need a lead to actually power the camera?

Just need a couple of similar performance batteries at £20 each or so.

Many thanks.

Let me know if you find some. I have looked and looked.

I am using the "Anton Bauer" Elipz 10k that Tim Dashwood recommended. It is awsome.

hi mate

i've used these on both my GZ-HD7 AND the HM100 and they seem to last just as long as the JVC batteries of the same size

they ARE however a little lighter so i'm not sure what that means as far as capacity

BestBatt.com - JVC BN-VF823 BN-VF823U BN-VF823USM Li-Ion Rechargeable Camcorder Battery

they are also a 3rd the price in Aussie dollars so i've got myself two of each (genuine and remake)

both are data batteries and don't require the little leads, i had one of them but i lost it..

Marty Mulholland June 8th, 2010 09:08 AM

has anyone thought about making their own?

i notice the DC input of the Hm100 (and other similar cams) is 11volts, that makes a step down from a 12 volt sealed lead acid or gel cell battery quite easy

i did it with an older style camera just need to do some research to see what signals are delivered on that little power lead

Search for Hahnel battery for GY HM100. I have one, about half the price of the JVC original, communicates with the camera just the same, performance just like original battery.

Thanks Colin, magic. I had a friend coming back from the states so he brought me a JVC genuine one back, I now have 3 which is useful, but could do with another at least. I'm shooting aboard an ocean racing yacht in a couple of weeks and the HM100 will be *much* better than waving around my DSR-450 on a pitching deck. I nabbed a Kata CRC-14 rain cover from eekbay for it and at first I though it was too big but actually I made it fit quite quite well, with room to flip out the side screen if needed. The smaller CRC-13 wouldn't allow this I don't think. Anyway for 30 quid I'm now splashproof. Next stop is an Epic underwater housing - that is going to allow me greater freedom in/near water so will report back with that one as and when. For incorporating into UK (PAL) SD news broadcast items, I shoot 1440X1080 50i at SP quality and Final Cut handles that very well (into a 16X9 anamorphic timeline full of DVCam footage). Will post results when it's broadcast on the 21st June. Meanwhile here's a pic of the stripped down HM100 jigged onto a disabled athlete's wheelchair using a small magic arm. The blob on the viewfinder is an i-cuff which is brilliant. I digress! :)
