Just to add I'd also welcome PP settings for the 100 to match it with EX1 - cheers!

No news? It's been months since the HM700 is out.... no serious DOP has some settings to share ? :)

Eric Deyerler July 21st, 2009 01:32 PM

A testmagazine in Germany (VideoaktiDigital) says
in a test, that the color-resolution with 35Mbit/s is really
better then Hpx301 with 4:2:2 with AvcIntra.

The first is to set the Kneepoint (80/85%),
Compress the black (3), when you want the master black
and the gamma.
The important facts for the HM700 is to
set the kneepoint and the gamma,
the black tones must be darker,
sayd the german magazine.

Thanks.. I did some tests myself and found a nice result with a +2 black.. but obviously it depends what result you want, what and where you shoot, etc.. but... I'd really like a proper set of settings done by serious DOP... ALso some picture profiles for matching other cameras...

I read Tims picture recipes, but the old recipes are only for the older JVC-Cams.

Today I shot some tests, and the best is at daylight-shots to compress the dark tones
(at max. Level 3), the gamma a little bit (sometimes), but the Master-black max. 1 step. With the right zoomfactor and iris around 5,6 will be the best results.

Sometimes the ND-Filter are not dark enought for me,
so I take the shutter around 1/200 - 1/500 to limit the bright sun-light
in some situations outside. Other cams got the opportunity to set the
gain in the negative (like - 3 dB), that will effect like a better ND-Filter.

I shot with an manuel knee at 80 %.

The next day I am on image-shots - indour and outdoor and I will make my best
with the HM700, but the 35 MBit/s is really sharper then HPX301 with AVCIntra.
(More resolution lines and more colour resolution!)

So I broke down and bought my HM100. I am off on Sat to film on Rainier for 3 days. Any file recipes for HM100 for best, most accurate colors? Thanks!

Marcello Mazzilli September 13th, 2009 04:23 PM

Tim.. still no news? Sorry to insist

Lighten up :)

Hey, guys, lighten up. Tim is a working DP and BUSY!

I think it's great that he goes through all the work that it takes to make his tested picture and scene files available to all, but it all takes time.

Besides, you should always make scene and picture files that match your particular camera. There is such a wide variance in all cams (some more than others), that no one settings file is going to work 100% as well as the individual cam they were tested on. So consider ANY settings file as a good start point, to be further tweaked for the cam you are actually shooting with.

Because of this variance, I am lucky enough (or cursed) to be able to have a JVC cam set up for each of my shooting specialties. A settings file that is perfect for one cam, isn't so good on another (even the same exact model). Plus there is the hardware changes and special tweaks that make having different camera systems for differed specialties a good choice for me.

Here is an example of what I mean: JVC Four Amigos

I shot every day with the HM700 for TV, Image and short-movies for TV,
everybody needs his own settings, good is
to set the kneepoint from 100 to 80/85,
compress the black tones, in the picture
will be crisp.
Hard contrasts due to wide iris can cause CAs.

picture profiles / scene files

Did Tim or any others complete any picture profiles / scene files for HM100 / EX1 combination?
