JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Hi all,
I decided to start a new thread for this. I cut together a few clips that I shot on my new HM600 over the past couple of days. Excuse the amateur camera work, it's my first professional video camera (aside from my XA10) so I'm still getting used to all of the manual controls. Enjoy! I've also quoted some initial thoughts about the camera that I posted in my other thread: Quote:

The long zoom starting at 1:22 and ending at 1:46 is impressive. I see some chromatic abberation on the automobile at full zoom. I know the camera was in full auto, but do you have any idea what the aperture was at that point? Did you have the ND filter engaged? Was the aperture full open? You said you were having trouble ingesting the .mp4 and .mov files. Is there a way you could post the native files from the camera for a 2 second clip in each format? I am interested how they work with my system. |

.MP4 imports just fine in Premiere Pro CS6 also.

Eric, I noticed the CA as well. Overall it looks a bit soft. It takes quite a while during zoom out before the softness and CA disappears. It almost looks like some of those zoomed in shots of the early/pre release version which JVC quickly fixed. |

Code:
ffmpeg -i QUICKTIME_MPEG2.MOV -vcodec copy -acodec pcm_s16le -y source.mxf With the chromatic abberation, does it go away if you stop the lens down a little? |

I'll get a few more zoomed in shots today and see if I can eliminate the softness and CA. edit: Here's another one. F3.2, 1/50, -6dB, ND 1/64, auto white balance, manual focus on the houses Quicktime MPEG2 compressed to H.264 MP4, 8mbit https://www.dropbox.com/s/jg4ushsxqxo2p15/ZoomTest.mp4 |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Thanks for posting these Samples, Jody. Some observations:
The "CA" that can be seen on the white car and is also on the edges on the trees looks more like the bleed that will often happen on edges where over exposure is occurring. This is not chromatic aberration from the lens, but rather too much light triggering adjacent red and blue pixels. This can be fixed in post without too much trouble if it's troublesome, but I'm not sure anyone but us pixel-peepers will notice. Try to avoid using negative gain. The data from the sensor will still be clipped and would likely exaggerate the purple fringing. Looking at the Monarch butterfly clip, it looks like it can focus quite close. Regarding the noise test you posted earlier, as Noa said, a comparison is only meaningful if you get the brightness levels the same between the 2 cameras being tested. A small chip is less sensitive so the gain setting won't track. I examined a still frame from both and noticed that there is much poorer dynamic range and more obvious noise reduction on the XA10. |

In the last scene of the pan of the river, it seems pretty soft, did you just have that out of focus. That lens seems awesome to me, except for some of that purple CA, Can that be taken out in post? Is it a pain to do. I'm close to pulling the trigger. Southerndude-USA |

And not too sure about the CA, I haven't had much experience with it. Loving the camera so far though. My only concern is that it's a lot noisier in low light than I thought it would be. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Hmm, this is interesting.
I did a time lapse using the interval record function tonight. All manual settings, and manual focus. At the start of the time lapse, the focus was perfect. But as the sun went down and the sky got darker, the focus went soft. Focus was definitely set to manual. Any thoughts as to why this would happen? I'm at the beach tonight but will upload the video tomorrow. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Did you need to open the aperture as the recording progressed?
|
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Was there any clear temperature changes?
Or did the 600 stand in the sun before sun down? |

Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
I just got my camera as well, I shot some footage in near dark at a conference, I had to gain all the way to -18 to get anything visible, yes it was noisy, but completely useable!
I noticed the same thing about the door on the SD cards, however I havn't felt any creeks in the handle. The screen was solid and could just be friction sounds. The internal mic picks up anything you do on the body, and I expected this so I have an NTG-2 hooked up. I hope to possibly get some good stock b-roll of Germany tomorrow so I will try to post some of that. I have to play with the detail settings as well as the skin detail options, I don't fully understand them yet. here is my clip, I dubbed in the audio again, but left some of my shotgun audio back in for ambience. |

Might do some more low light testing tonight. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
My understanding is that the noise was addressed by the firmware update released in December. Not having one of these yet, I don't know what version number it is.
Hope this helps. - Alan |

Tim the footage looks great. We have shot some demo footage with our Camera and our customers who purchased these from us have been very pleased.

Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Some more footage I put together. Shot entirely on the HM600.
Note that some of the shots are colour graded. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Jody, can you post your videos of the GY-HM600 to Vimeo? I hate Youtube, their compression is so bad, It makes it hard to evaluate any video. Or if there is a place we could download a short file?
Love the range on that lens! |

Edit: Here's a 12mbit .mp4: https://www.dropbox.com/s/61lxxwxmgg...Main_Final.mp4 Would recommend downloading the file as the player seems to compress the video. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Here's some more low light footage. Definitely better than I first thought, it's quite usable at 0dB. I'll try and get some 6dB tests up too.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5icrlzv36w...20Test%202.mp4 My expectations were obviously too high at first. As I mentioned, this is my first professional video camera aside from the XA10 so I wasn't sure what to expect. From what I can tell, the JVC tries to maintain as much detail as possible in low light as possible, while the XA10 sacrifices detail to reduce noise and produce a cleaner image. I think that's why I was so confused as to why the HM600 was so noisy. The first low light tests can be found here: http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/jvc-gy-h...0-arrived.html but honestly, I'd ignore them. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
I got out for a day trip to Prague and filmed this. I accidentally turned the LowLUX mode on and so some of the footage is grainy. You can also see how the focus started to search a few times. This was not obvious on the LCD screen, so I just need to be aware of it when using the camera.

Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Thanks Tim. And thanks for making the original 1080p available for download.

I've had some issues with the focus searching too. I don't trust the auto focus at all. I was doing some testing the other day, and sometimes even when the camera has good focus, it keeps hunting. Hopefully this is an issue JVC can look into. |

In a few parts, especially of the cathedral, it looks like there is some wavering of the video, like there was a heat wave in front of the lens. DO you see what I'm seeing? What ere the Gain settings? and all the other also. Thanks, |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Nice and sharp footage from Prague, but I see the waviness as well, especially at 02:05 in that extreme zoom from the city you see the whole image deforming a bit, something I see on all zoom shots, the further zoomed in, the worse it gets. Could it be that a stabilizer has been applied in post? I know that Edius stabilizer has that effect when you stabilize handheld footage.
|
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
The footage was stabilized with FCPx, so thats likely what you see there, I should upload a copy without any post work.

I found this funny Clip that was done in France on the JVC HM650/600 , Video quality looks great

Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Nice job, Jody. I see you have a statue of Riff Raff. :)
I haven't been to Hamilton for many years. I used to go there every time there was a horse race meeting in the early 80s doing judicial filming. |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
I got a chance to shoot a decent timelapse outside my window, sadly we're not low enough to go under the trees, or high enough to go over, and It was tricky trying to figure out what to frame. I decided to use the anamorphic widescreen crop overly, and then I cropped my footage on export with compressor. I feel it came out not too bad!
|
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
Tim -
Can you give us the specs on your timelapse (aperture, shutter, interval, etc)? Thanks, Alan |
Re: JVC HM600 Sample Footage/Thoughts
It was one frame per 10 seconds for several hours (5 or 6? Can not remember exactly now) and I had it on auto iris auto shutter with fixed gain and fixed focus on the church roof.
