80 or 83 minutes? Panasonic or Sony?
 

Which is more reliable and will deliver the best results from your exeprience?

Or is there an appreciable difference? What do you use?

Thanks as I need a longer tape than 60 minutes in SP mode.

I stick with the Sonys so that I can select whatever grade of tape I want to use, and still remain within only having one type of tape lubricant present in my deck.

(Changing brands and hence lubricants can bring unwanted issues)

I've always used Maxell who only makes 60 minute tapes so AFAIK, I have no choice as to use another brand for a longer tape.

Dipped my toe in the water and bought my first 5 ever at this length from B & H Photo earlier today which I hope will show up tommorrow.

Individual price was fair and lower than any where else I could find in the USA except for a place I knew nothing about in Texas which would have taken too much tme to arrive.

Hoping for the best.

I've got a Panasonic tape that gives dropouts when playing back HDV material. Each time the dropout occours in a different random place. In other words, if I do two captures I stand a good chance of getting everything. Same goes for others here.

This is why I don't use the Panasonic tapes any more and shifted to Sony.

If you just ONCE put a Sony tape in the camcorder before the Panasonic you will potentially have the problem you described because the debris mix is moving around to different places each time. IF you use Sony stay Sony for everything. I keep one of my camcorders for non-Sony tapes and they all play fine. All the other camcorders are exclusively Sony and they are Ok too. Just don't mix or have the camcorder professionally cleaned and then stay with the other brand.

Yes this is true.

Though at the time I was only using Panasonic tapes and in fact (from memory) it was the very first or second thing I shot with my brand new (Sony) camera. Panasonic tapes both times.

After the issues, I've gone straight to Sony only for tapes and haven't looked back.

I live on the wild side. I use 83 panny and sony 60 in my sony camera. never had a problem.

The first time I used a Panasonic tape in my Sony DHR1000 deck it locked the deck up and had to back to Sony to get the tape out. Then again in one of my camcorders, same thing. Haven't mixed tapes since!!!

I did a freelance job, on the weekend, and was provided 83min Panasonic tapes.
I have also used the odd Sony and Maxell, and only ever had one dropout. it ended up being the tape. I primarily use Panny tapes, and have never had any issues.
