Bought an Xacti HD1000 yesterday at B&H and LOVE it! If Sanyo were to make a "pro" version of this Xacti it would be great!!!
It begs for a manual focus ring and a few other small refinements....

Here's a very quick clip in 720P60 right out of the camera with no adjustments at all other than cutting the clip's duration (hence the .mov extension instead of .mp4)
All I did was kneel down and shoot into my snakes cage~~~(had a very harsh LED flashlight on top of the cage so there's slight clipping with a blue hue)

You bought it right after B&H lowered its price and for people who doesn’t live in New York, their offering free shipping.

I agree that the footage you can get in this camcorder is very good and it easily competes with AVCHD camcorders but I also wish they would release a more professional model because many companies are sacrificing features such as a focusing ring, etc and Sanyo can really take advantage of that market especially if they also increase the bit rate to around 20 to 25Mbps and add 24p and 30p options to the 1920X1080 mode.

Yes a "Pro" version of this type of cam would be great. I'd especially like to see a manual focus ring (or similar) and histogram/highlight info.......other than that I'm pretty pleased with it.

It produces cleaner and more accurate colors than the HD1/10 series from JVC, for a fraction of the price.
The (720P) files drop straight into FCP6 (FCS2) and can be edited no problem at all, I'm guessing it might be similar for PC users.

(It can use the Aiptek Go-HD batteries, what a plus!!!!)

I found those links via another route when I was debating between the HD1000 and the HD700, but both the Sanyo link ( http://sanyohd1000.com/ ) and the direct link to the 263MB one ( http://charbax.videohost.eu/ifa2007/SANY0003.MP4 ) don't seem to be working for some reason. Had the large one on my drive but seemed to have deleted it.

Considering the HD-1010 for shooting underwater
 

I've been batting around the idea of this camera along with the Patima Housing and Inon UWL-100 Type II lens for shooting freedivers, and large pelagic sea life (Manatee, Whale Sharks, other freedivers, etc) while freediving.

The lens offers so much depth of field that I figure I could set the focus to manual and lock it at around 2 feet and hyperfocal would carry focus out to infinity.

Anyone consider this camera a serious way to acquire footage that COULD be broadcast quality? Or at least Web broadcast distribution at 720p?

It's not even close to broadcast quality and could never be, especially at such a low bit rate. It's a fine carry around camcorder and even fairly good in decent light, but overall IQ is not great.

There is a lot of CA, especially with the WA lens attachments (I use the 0.4x mainly).

I also own the Sony PMW-EX1 and that camera IS broadcast quality. The difference between the HD1010 and the EX1 is night and day. Absolutely no comparison.

On the HD1010, autofocus does not work (hunts too much) and manual focus can only be set PRIOR to starting to record. Also, many settings reset to default if the camera is turned off or goes to sleep.

It's a great camera to take places you wouldn't want to take a 'real' camera, but don't count on it for serious footage.

Underwater housing for Sanyo Xacti

I also came across an underwater housing from the Sanyo Xacti on B&H by Epoque:

If you do a search on there for "Epoque" you'll also see a couple macro and WA lenses AND stepping rings, which you're likely to need. It's also available through Amazon.com. It's rated down to 150'

For "dry land" videography, I looked at adding an external mic, so I looked at the Sennheiser MKE 400, a nice compact shotgun mic (Sennheiser | MKE 400 Compact Video Camera Shotgun | MKE 400) , and also the German TinyMike (Ambient Recording | TinyMike Kit - Compact | ATM216PD | B&H) .

I should note that these mics would only make sense to use with the Xacti HD2000, since it's the only one with an external mic jack (2.5mm - comes with 3.5mm adapter). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the HD2000 is from-factor compatible with the HD1010 so the UW housings are useable. It also captures video at 1080p/60 @ 24MB/s, which is great, but I still don't think this will bring it into the TV broadcast-quality arena. I've seen where several people have compared the Xacti with their EX1s and it's (IMHO) like comparing a high-quality RC car with a production model SUV! I do, however, appreciate the spirit in which the comparison is made.

I would certainly (and intend to) buy the new Xacti for "run & gun" docu-type stuff on a budget.
