New Card reader
Hi
I just found it today. Nexto announces NVS2500 backup storage device: Digital Photography Review Better then having laptop for upload purpose on location. Cheers |
Given the prices I'm hearing for it I'm not convinced it is better than a laptop short of needing something very small at about the same price as a MacBookPro.
I can buy several (many) 16GB or 32GB SDHC cards totaling much more storage than this device. For the same price as that device I can play offloaded clips for my client to screen and/or do a rough cut on a laptop. |
Hi Craig,
I couldn't find prices. Simply assumed that 160GB device (able to hold about 10 hrs of footage) wouldn't cost too much. Instead of having twenty 16GB card with MxR adapters (what would be a total cost?) you could have 10. But again it will all depends on the price of that device. Unless you are talking about having many cards and only couple of the MxR adapters. What did you hear about price? Please share. Thanks |
I've heard it's about $2000 but I can't find any confirmation of that.
Maybe that price was just a false rumor. |
Taking in consideration that it can only read, write and able to upload,
compare to Focus drives for example - I agree it is too much, if what you heard is correct. |

I met with Nexto today and got a good look at the device. It supports SxS as well as P2 with included PC card to Express34 adapter.
This device is very useful for offloading where you do not have a computer available. Most impressive feature is clip preview. Nexto has not actually established a price, but it is definitely less than the $2000 that Craig mentioned. Ned Soltz |
One would hope it's less than $2000. Than doesn't seem in line with their past products. It must have been conjecture by someone claiming to know. There's lots of NAB stuff flying around "quoting" info not in the press releases.

My info is directly from the Nexto vendor who gave me a ball-park price but asked not to print it since final price has not been determined. It is less than $2K but it is still a pricey item.
You could buy a laptop computer for the price that was suggested to me, but the value of this product is its portability if you can't bring a laptop in the field. Product, btw, is ruggedized with drop sensors. Ned |
Humm ...
If Nexto was hard drive removable so that a sata 11 - 320 gigger running at 7200 could be replaced in the field ... it would be worth buying ... depending on the price. This type of devise really should be priced at around $900 US or so. They'd sell quite a few if the conditions were right.

I never took a picture of it but I was at the NAB yesterday and Sony now has a SxS memory card ready you can use to dump clips to out in the field. It runs off the same battery (small and big) but if you use the large "60" battery you can't close the battery door. It also has a 240gb hdd which is removable and can be connected directly to your computer using a usb cable.
Didn't realize it was already written about. http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/sony-xdca...-news-nab.html |
