Windows Media Player is showing mpg2's all corrupt.

I've just built a new video editing machine and finally rendered some mpg2 files for archival purposes. The weird thing is when I play then back through WMP it's like the modulo (stride) is all up the duff. It's hard to explain but it's like each line is rotated a little more than the previous one and so it's all misaligned. My old machine plays these mpg's perfectly and I've never had problems in the past. I installed a new codec and got the same problems. There is not much info on the net that I could find regarding this problem but I'm starting to wonder if it's my video card (A Matrox G550) combined with WMP. When I play the mpgs back with PowerDVD on the new machine they play back perfectly fine so something is collaberating to ruin the images.

Also, when I select an mpg in explorer, the preview frame that a appears is upside down!

Anyone else had this problem at all and know how to remedy it?

Cheers
Aaron

The "problem" is that WMP isn't playing back your file at all, it is
simply a conduit to a codec. In this case an mpeg2 codec. That
is the one that is decoding the file incorrectly.

Did you install any "weird" mpeg software?

Rob, I realise it's the codec but I have not installed any weird mpeg2 codecs. I have installed Vegas and PowerDVD and that is all.

PowerDVD installs an MPEG2 decoder filter. What happens if you
play back the files in PowerDVD, does that work? If you want to
be sure that this is the problem try deinstalling PowerDVD and
see what happens (WMP probably can't play back mpeg2 anymore).

You might try another mpeg2 decoder filter that for example
comes with WinDVD.

I have PowerDVD 2.5 and WMP9 on my editing system and have had no problem with the Media Player playback, except with ripped VOBs, which play upside down in MP and fine in PowerDVD.

nVidia's nvdvd DVD player software will also install an MPEG2 decoder for Windows Media Player.

On more research I have found at least a work around.

If I put my desktop to 24bit and not 32 then I can see the image, but it's totally upside down.

If I leave my desktop to whatever I want, but use the Matrox Display settings to disable DirectX acceleration then it plays perfectly. So it looks like no DirectX acceleration for me. I think it's something to do with this stupid video card. Will upgrade one day.

Thanks all for your help.
