Output to VHS

I'm having a tough time getting decent quality to a VHS tape and hope someone may have a suggestion for improvement.

I'm editing in Premiere Pro, outputting through a Matrox RTX 100 Extreme 1394 to a JVC SR-VS30 Deck. I dub to the MiniDV side of the deck and then dub from MiniDV to VHS internal to the deck. Quality problems are VERY apparent, total loss of detail and overblown colors.

Since that didn't work, I've tried using the analog out of the RTX100 and feeding directly to the deck w and S-Video cable. Better, but still not near what I'm hoping for.

What works for you guys?

Thanks

Hi,

In most cases, it shouldn't matter from tape (made from DV 1394 source) or computer analog outputs, but some folks do report one technique as being better than the other.

Your color blow out might be oversaturation. I don't have a Matrox, but I suspect you can limit IRE output to 100 by clamping colors to 100. That should help.

Mike,

Thanks for the suggestion, I know it can be done in PP so I'll check there first.

BTW, I'm looking forward to a vacation in Kalispell this summer, hear it's a great place.

It's terrible here. Don't come.

My wife and I had our honeymoon up there (Whitefish) and loved it.

Hope things warm up for you soon.
