Extract audio from mpeg2 file
 

Hi all,

I have a client who has supplied me with an mpeg-2 file to work from. Now apart from the hassle of this, the quality is fine - it is compressed to about 10Mbps IBP (the frame size is a little odd at 720x400 though).

The problem I am having is, I can extract the video and transcode it into an editable form no problem. But I am getting a lot of clicks in the audio when I work with it - the audio is fine when played back in the original mpeg-2 file.

What are the best tools to use to extract the audio?

Extract might be the "wrong" word here. Normally an MPEG file
is demuxed (ie, split) into its basic elements. Do you happen to
know what kind of audio stream it is? You might try a google
search on "mpeg2 demux" and otherwise I can probably find you
a free tool to do it.

Which application where you using now?

I've done a hunt around and found VirtualDub did what was needed - stated with multiplexed MPEG2 and created .WAV audio file.

It seems like a mighty useful tool, and free too!

VirtualDub is a very handy little tool indeed,
even has a range of interesting plugins available. All free.
