Formatting HDs for DV & Cluster Size?
Hello,
Just wondering if there is an advantage in selecting specific cluster sizes when formatting a HD for DV editing. I know 64k cluster sizes are ideal for audio editing but what about video?? Here is a thread that explains why audio benefits from the largest cluster size: http://groups.google.com.au/groups?h....uk%26rnum%3D3 (Read message 6 in thread) Would this be the case for editing video too??? Regards, Jack |
Well in theory larger block sizes should work well with video since
those files are very large as well. Whether the speed difference is that much to bother is something I doubt with today's harddisks. But a test could reveal whether it is worthwile. Keep in mind that some harddisk tools have trouble with large cluster sizes (like some defragmentation / partition tools for example). I assume the default Windows tools should work without any problems. Personally I just let the NTFS format pick the cluster size it wants for a given partition size. |
