firewire rage, help!
 

OK, you've probably read my previous post about my firewire not working.
I got a new, different card, put it in, and the computer still won't recognize the camera when I plug it in.

The card is set up and Device Manager says it is working properly.
It can't be my XL1, can it? I have 2, and neither owrk, so I can't see it being that.

So it has to be something in Win XP, right? Could I have somehow disabled the plug&play feature?

PS, tried plugging the camera in before turning the computer on, no change.

You might check the documentation for the firewire card and see what driver set it should be using. Some versions of Windows use the TI driver set which is incorrect for many NLEs.

Win XP used the TI driver set for the ADS Pyro card, and it worked fine at first.
The new card I have uses a different set, can't remember offhand which.
It doesn't work with my NLE (Vegas) or Windows XP.

Well you could try looking up the driver set on the Internet. BTW, is it an old Lynx card? I know that one does not like the TI driver set at all.

Not a Lynx card, the new one is made by Vitex. Just a generic card. Cost me about $20us. It'll be another week before my new ADS Pyro card comes back. Looks like there was nothing wrong with it. Oops.

Anyway, fudged around with it some more today, no luck.

Looks like it's time to format and reinstall the whole show from scratch.

Formatted the system, reinstalled everything from scratch.

STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!!

Well... you probably do not want to hear this, but my primary
suspect would be XP. I've said it a couple of times before on this
board, XP isn't (in my very humble opinion) ready for the big
multimedia tasks we demand of it. Sure there is a large group
of users out there that are using it fine, I use it at home for my
programming work as well.

But my video work is still on Windows 2000 Professional. I think
this OS is currently the most stable OS out there for such demanding
work (for the PC)! Also some hardware and more specific, drivers
tend to work less reliable under XP.

So if you can, try installing Windows 2000 Professional and see
what that does.

p.s. you checked your firewire cable? Is there anyone in your
area that has a working setup? Then you can at least verify
that your cameras and cable etc. are okay

Rob, I am going to borrow a copy of Win 2000, install it and try that. I've tried 3 different cables. I tried them on my 2nd computer and it did not work (also uses XP). I;m very seriously considering the possibility that a bad cable could have shorted out the DV ports in both my cameras. I'm going to try them on a Mac later this week. If they do or don't work on that, will reveal everything.
