Does record speed of VHS tape affect capture?
 

I recently converted footage from seven VHS tapes to DVD using the composite inputs on my Panasonic DVC80 camcorder. One or two of the tapes was recorded in EP or SLP (6- or 8-hour mode), and my capture tool had a very hard time "tracking" the signal. The SP mode tapes I captured gave no such problems. Would an A-to-D converter box with time-base correction, such as one of those $400 Canopus models, yield better results?

Would I experience the same problem with a dedicated DVD recorder? I'm considering a JVC VHS/DVD-R combo reocorder (the model without the hard drive).

To speed or not to speed??
 

I started this video hobby just for vhs to dvd transfers and after buying high end vhs machines my old Panasonic AF does great! To answer your question about speed of the tape---> I record on high speed so I guess I will have to test this theory. Hope your ? get answered by someone that has been there done that. John
