Something To Try: Closed Captions/Teletext and DV Devices

Hello,

We have a new product that we are about to make available for public beta testing. One of the features we are considering is providing Closed Caption/Teletext support. We need to know how many DV devices out there implement the part of the official DV specification that permits embedding of such information.

Our tests with a variety of Sony camcorders and tape decks are encouraging.

If you'd like to help provide the information, here's what to do:

Connect the analog input of your recording device to the analog output of a VCR, satellite receiver etc. Tune the VCR/receiver to a channel that you know is broadcasting CC or Teletext (easiest way is just turn them on via the remote for your TV) and record a few seconds of the video signal on the DV device.

(Closed Captioning is predominantly in the US. Teletext is used almost everywhere but the US and can carry about 10 times as much information).

Now connect the analog output of the DV device to the VCR/receiver/TV so that the TV will display the DV analog signal. Play back the segment you recorded and see if the TV can display the captions/teletext etc.

(It's actually quicker to do than to type!)

If it works, please provide details, including DV device, NTSC or PAL, Closed Captions or Teletext. If it doesn't work, please state the DV device.

(Not-So-Trivia: Effective 1st January 2006, the US FCC has mandated that "all 'new' English language programming, defined as analog programming first published or exhibited on or after January 1, 1998, and digital programming first aired on or after July 1, 2002, must be captioned, with some exceptions.")

Many thanks,
