Frame Based Slow Motion

In some advertisement for NLE software or capture board I read that "frame based" slow motion effects in NLE's gave better looking slo mo than "time based." As I consider upgrading my system, would non-biased forum members with experience in both agree you get smoother slo mo with frame based? If so that is one more thing I would put on my "wish list" for NLE--I think P6.0 is time based slo mo effect?

I guess frame based is MJPEG and time based is MPEG and DV. They use MJPEG in sports editing because it gives you better slow motion - not so jagged. This will be down to your capture card and not the software. Although you can de-interlace in Premiere to make a MPEG or DV video not so jagged.

Capture card for MJPEG - Matrox LE
Capture card for MPEG/ DV - Matrox LX

What capture cards were you looking at?

Hope I had not got the wrong end of the stick. Ignore it if I'm wrong.

Right End of Stick

Thanks, Ed. I need to check because I maybe should have said "field based" instead of "frame based." The context I remember was comparing software-- Pinnacle Edition 5 (frame or field based) to Adobe Premiere (time based), but capture card may have been part of that. I was thinking about changing from Premiere to Edition 5 for other reasons, but that slo mo "advantage"-- if real--sounded worthwhile also as I do a lot of slo mo.

Make sure if doing slow motion that it is frame/ field based it saves you having to put filters on and having to render each time you want a smooth Slow-mo. MJPEG also gives you better picture quality than MPEG and DV.

Thanks,

Ed Smith
