In addition to videography I'm also into graphic design, animation, and photography. I was inspired by another thread and decided to post some samples of my own work:

Sick. My favorite has to be the one of your Protege5, that has professional written all over it, looks like it's from one of the commercials or something, heh.

It appears you can draw pretty good too, I wish I could do that, I can't draw for crap, though.

I like the doc poster. Good job on that (not that the others aren't good!).

He he, I'm sure some people are going to see it and wonder "what the heck?!". Just for some background info- the "Wing Bowl" is a wing eating contest based out of Philly. It's in it's 12th year and now boasts over 23,000 in attendence...making it the largest eating competition in the entire world. We shot it similar to the tone of the old Bodybuilding documentary "Pumping Iron" with Arnold Schwartzenegger in that we followed one "competitor" and showed a behind the sceens look of how he "trains" (you got it- this guy trained like a fighter, eating 150 wings 3 nights a week to prepare...I KID YOU NOT!) It turned out to be a really funny satyrical comedy documentary. We even had a musican friend compose the score. It was almost too "good"...lol. Sounded like it should have been in braveheart or something. My friend is a total professional with 4 Carnegy Hall appearances. It's nice to know a musican in the video business!

Oh my goodness - twenty-three thousand attendees? And that guy training - I couldn't eat 150 wings in a year (mainly because I don't like them!).

What is first prize for such internal abuse? A year's supply of wings or handi-wipes?

Is this documentary for sale on DVD/VHS or anything? I want to buy one, sounds pretty funny. Any puking? heh.

Oddly enough it wasn't all that great until last year where the prize was a new car. All previous years were a trip to Aruba- which doesn't make sense, after eating all those wings...who's gonna take their shirt off and bask on the beach! lol

Overall it's a really fun event- not only is it on a crazy premise but the contenders all have names and themes similar to WWF (I'm sorry ww"E"). For example- our guy was named Chilli Dawg and he came out drug in a giant oversized doghouse. There's prizes for best entrance as well. Better yet each contender gets Wing'ettes. Usually local area stripper/models to sit behind them to towel them off and count their wings! Its a really once in a life-time event....it's Philly's "Marti Gra". Just absolute crazyness.

I wish there was a medium on which I could share this documentary with you guys. The only thing I can think of is streaming....at a ridiculously small frame size. :( Even then, I don't have the webspace to provide it.

It's funny you ask- there's plenty of puking, thats why every female that ever see's it can't see the humor in it. They just look away and say this is so disgusting. They can't seem to find a reason to do a documentary on such a bizzare subject. I guess it's a guy thing. I'll go dig up some photos- give me a few minutes.....

Btw, the doc was shot on an XL1-S and a few of the interviews were on my GL-1. Edited on Premiere 6.02 (ugh..I know, I KNOW!)

I'm not sure why I would want to see an entire doc of fat men, eating wings, being toweled and fondled by local strippers and then throwing up! However, the stills would be nice!!!! ;)

It sounds like an experience! I'll bet the "entrances" are pretty interesting also. I'm currently shooting a doc on the making of the Wright Brother's Statue for the Flight Centennial. It is six months in the making (through DEC) and I'm guessing the average person would much rather see fat men eating and barfing wings then the making of a statue! Our target audience will be musuems and art colleges/departments. Unless I can get some of the Philly strippers to come down with guns and raid the studio, I'm afraid I can't expand my audience at all!

As for Premiere, I use that, Pinnacle and will soon use that new AVID Free DV when it comes out. My computer will probably get so confused, it will sit down and cry. But I like Premiere 'ok'. Maybe I just don't know better.

have you tried werkin in flash? being that you have some nicely handdrawn pics, not sure if flash will utilize a wacom

Yeah well that peice your working on obviously IS worlds apart from "EAT!". Eat! is far from anything serious or profound...but that's where the humor is. It's shot in such a serious way on such a crazy subject. It's hillarious how serious some of the competitors take it. And 23,000 fans attend...to see what..... nothing more than a bunch of fat guys gorge themselves on wings 6-o'clock in the morning (it's sponsored by a local morning sports radio station in Philly- 610 WIP). We got press passes for the event and shot it along side of Channel 3 and Fox news (I kid you not).

Yeah the Tiburon was all show and no go- in other words...it "looked" faster than it was. lol As far as the Protege5, I love it. Obviously I didn't get it to race it- it's quite versital- it carries all my equipment when I go to shoots and has a handy little cargo net to tie everything down.
Regarding shifting the Protege- I'd have to disagree....I love it! The Tiburon's shifter was so "sloppy", I love the tight notchy feel of the Pro5. And it's quite a short throw compared to my mom's regular Protege ES. It's the best gearbox on the mazda line-up next to the Miata. Anyway if I had my quams I'd be driving a 2004 Subaru Impreza STi. 300bhp/awd....all on an horizontally opposed 4 cyldr! Gotta love it! Insurance is a killer in NJ- hence my flashy grocery getter. :)

Re: Flash. Yeah I was doing those animations in photoshop frame by frame before I learned flash. I picked up a copy of Flash MX and even got the training CDs from Lynda.com...but never found the time to really get into it. I know it's much more intuitive for animation....the way I was doing it was long and tedious. Maybe someday in between shooting weddings and shorts, and learning Vegas 4.0 (love it!) I'll pick up flash again. What I'd really like to learn is Director MX...!!

Yeah, I know the two docs are different, I was trying to make a joke - I hope you didn't think I was knocking or being offensive to your finished piece!

I find it hard to believe (but I do believe you) that most contestants were under 200 lbs! Unbelieveable.

ok, im thinkin of wrong tansmission then...my old roomie had the standard 4 door protege...the transmission was very easy to shift, but rather "loose" feeling. One of the guys i used to werk with in FL just got an STI...cant wait to go back down there and drive that beast!

anyhoo, the wing thing...any clips to show us? did u edit it on Vegas?

Mark, we just submitted it to it's first festival- whether it gets accepted or not...I dunno. But it seems to be fitting. It's a film festival that is trying to collect works that were filmed in Philly. And the best part is there is a Food/Culinary catagory for entry. Wouldn't that be hillarious if it "qualified" for that entry- it'd be funny because I'm sure every other entry in it's class will be serious...ya know, about some local restaurant or budding chef- then here we are with this off the wall doc (about food) but not quite like the others. ;)
We've considered maketing it but we don't know all the ins and outs regarding the legality of it. For example don't we need written consent of all the people in it if we are marketing it for profit. Also what about bystandards.....do we have to blur their faces out if we don't have a written agreement for them to be included in the doc?

Trey, yeah the P5 and the standard Protege are worlds apart. The P5 has a front strut bar and front and rear bottom sway bars factory installed...needless to say it handles incredibly bone stock! It's a little skimping on the hp department but that's what a Bell Engineering supercharger is for. There's a bunch of guys that went this route on another forum I frequent- some have even posted videos of their runs...you'd be suprised how fast some of them are- breaking into the high 14's with this little mazda. lol


Unfortunatly we edited the entire doc in Premiere 6.02. I had no working knowlege of Vegas at the time. I can't wait till I get up and running with it- I was watching the ClassOnDemand DVD 2 last night and the Pan/Crop tool OWNS Premiere's "Motion" tool!

I know there is someone on the board that knows that answer, as I'm only theorizing - but for our doc, we are getting releases signed by ANYONE that's recognizable in the piece. We're also getting location releases to show their buildings in the doc and (in the case of the sculptor), he has unfinished "works in progress" all over his studio that are coming up in the background, and I'm getting releases to show his pieces of art (without compensation), including the Wright Brother's statues themselves.

However, I just don't know if I NEED to do all that, I'm just doing it. In a place with 23,000 smiling faces, I would think some are going to be recognizable, as well as the other contestants.

Can anyone answer this definitively for us?

Good luck getting in the festival. My one short was oh-for-four on the festival attempts!

Mark, the best idea for filming a big venue with lots of people, legally, is to put a sign outside the entrance(s) saying something along the lines of "BY ATTENDING THIS VENUE YOU MAY APPEAR ON VIDEO".

That's certainly the easiest way to do it, but is it legal? I wouldn't have a clue! I'll certainly need to find out when I go to Kitty Hawk during the Flight Centennial week. It will be packed there!

I did a search for "waiver release" and came up with some interesting info - but the more releases you have, the better off you are - though anyone can sue at any time, regardless of release. And if you harm someone's reputation, they have a better chance.

At least that's the intent of what I read!

I interned on teh show "Life Moments" and went on a few shoots in Los Angeles as a PA in charge of getting all the needed releases. From what I remember, you need to have releases for any person interviewed, as well as featured groups or people you specifically pick out of the crowd to include in a shot. Especially minors. General crowd shots don't necessitate getting a release from everyone who was there, but you do need to do something along the lines of what Alex was saying. I'm not sure what the exact words you need to include are, but you need to put the signs in a highly visible area, and explicitly express that by attending the event in question, they give their unconditional permission to the producers for their likeness to be used. It's good to have contact info as well. Hope that answers some of your questions :)
