Camera Flip Image Prior to Recording?
With the increasing popularity of 35mm adapters, a nice feature would be for cameras to actually flip the image before it is recorded, or outputted via SDI or HDMI.
Why bother when you can flip the image in post? 1. When you compare to the original footage you are comparing to footage that's upside down. 2. If you recapture at a higher resolution, you have to flip the new capture. This can be a real hassle if you have a lot tapes and clips. 3. Flipping the image is not always a lossless process, depending on resolution and software used. |
24frames? I am still not getting it
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I was not sure where to ask it.
As for the 24P cameras I understand the slower rate matches the film rate and causes the blur that better emulates film. So here are the points I am still after months of reading not understanding. Some cameras shoot 24 and capture 24 and you see and edit 24, but the tv can play 60i so where does that change occur? This is cameras like a canon XLH1 Other cameras shoot 24 but capture it in a 60i and you see 24 on a tv but in order to edit it you need to do a pull down to make it just 24 not in a 60i ? Is that right? and if so what difference does that make in editing? And if you capture the 24 without the pull down, and edit it and then render a 24 movie for dvd which sees it at 60i does it matter? What do you see visibly different? what are the problems with not doing a pull down? What happens if you shoot 60i instead of 24 then edit it and render a 24 video for dvd? I will tell you my issues, I don't see the major differences, but then I am not the only final viewer so I want to do it right. I shoot with the XLH1 and an HV20 and HG10, I know the XLH1 is fine, the others need to have a pull down, I do not do that yet, but I edit and output to a 24 HD-mov, or HD-wmv, or SD-dvd. I am thinking of a possible upgrade to a flash camera, either the HF10 or the SR11, the SR11 seems to have every benefit but 24p mode, and the hf10 has 24 but needs a pulldown, which I still do not understand at all. What difference will I really see between shooting 24 in a 60i and not doing a proper pulldown, and doing a proper pulldown, and a camera that does not need the pulldown as it shoots it as 24, and finally a camera that shoots 60i only and is rendered in the final edit as 24? And if it helps I am using Sony Vegas 8 to edit and gearshift to make sd proxies and edit. I am really sorry, it just seems that every answer I read is above my ability to follow or does not give any reasons for why or what the real difference is only you need to do this because type answers. I am sure there are reasons, and I really want to understand it, I think I just need one slow easy to follow answer designed for dummies to help me get the initial concept. I hope someone can help. How to batch encode DV-AVI to Divx? Special program?
Hi,
I'm the process of archiving all my old VHS tapes into AVI format. They will get captured at DV-AVI which is 13 GB/hour and I would like to compress them to a Dvix format, which should keep the quality good, but at less than 1/10th the space. Is there a special program that will batch encode the DV-AVI files? I can do one at a time in Premiere, but it takes a long time and it's a lot of work to do per file... Any suggestions? |
Film club projecting setup?
Hi,
We have a local film club, and every year we give film shows of our work to audiences of around 100-150 people. We will project films from miniDV and DVD, and currently use an old analogue mixer that someone used for linear editing back in the olden days :-) I've been looking for a replacement for this relic of a mixer, and have spotted the Datavision SE500 and the Edirol equivalent. These are both things of joy to look at and play with, however they don't do audio! So if we used one of these we'd have to have a separate audio mixer and when dissolving, have one hand on audio and another on video? Isn't there anything out there that can mix 2 channels of audio AND video at the same time, or at least with 2 sliders that are a handspan or less away? What do other people do? |
Compact HD intraframe camcorder?
I'm just a hobbyist and wondering...
Is there such a thing as a compact camcorder that uses an intraframe-only codec? If not, is Panasonic DVCPRO-HD at approx $5K the basic cost of entry for a codec in which each frame is independently encoded? Thank you. Regards, DG |
A good source for Apple XRAID Drive Modules?
Greetings. I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I appreciate some n00b graces here. I'm looking for Apple XRAID drive modules for our server. I think they're the PATA modules, not SATA.
What's a good source? Any suggestions or contacts appreciated. |
SDI output to PC?
Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong forum.
I just upgraded to the XL H1 and I have a question regarding SDI output to a PC. This is new to me. Using a decklink card like Decklink HD Extreme, can I simply export 4:2:2 from my XL H1 to my PC assuming my hard drive is fast enough and large enough? Thanks |
Shooting a hip-hop music video
Im going to be shooting a hip-hop music video with a HVX 200. I just wanted to get any of your technical recomendations about how I should shoot the band - i.e. camera settings, techniques etc. I want it to be high energy, and at the moment I am finding a high shutter gives a nice stabby motion to their movements. Also Im going to use a wide lens.
Any tips or advice you can share? Thx guys |
CV's and the video/film industry
Sorry if this has been brought up before but this is something that has been on the back of my mind for a little while now; in terms of CV layouts are the ones that are used by yourselves and crews in the video/film industry different to the conventional ones that are used by people in other fields of work?
In terms of experience do you put the company you worked for, e.g: Jan 08 - Mar 08 - Company - Role Description of job Or do you put down the actual production you were present on and the productions details in terms of director/producer? e.g: Title of Film (year) - Length, format, role. The reason I ask is because I have seen examples of both layouts, but unsure as to which one is more favoured in this field of work. Is there a specific style for people who work in the video/film field? Although I have made a series of short promotional videos, they were made whilst contracted to a company so do I put the company or the productions themselves? I hope I clear enough :D |
4:3 to 16:9
Looking for a solution to my problem. I have YJ20x8.5B KRS 2/3" lens attached to an old 1/2" DSR 370 PAL which is 4:3 ratio only. Is there any kind of lens attachment to create a 16:9 ratio image that would be Full Frame Anomorphic. I've done the masking option and a few clients have made a few negative comments about doing that.
I'm trying to drag the life span of my old camera out for one more year before I upgrade to HD, as money is tight. Hope someone as the answer.. |
Wireless CCTV in HD possible?
after doing some light research, wired solution still seems to be the best bang for the buck. you can even pay a bit more to get certain camcorders taht can capture license plate #s in great detail, but not every camcorder.
if you paid $15,000 for a wired system and you used that same budget on a wireless, you get degraded quality. will wirelessHD resolve these types of issues? the IP-based camcorders i've seen are around 200-300 lines res. 400+ can get extremely pricey let alone HD. i would think security would require something extremely hi-def to capture what is happening onscreen, i'm surprised no1 has come up with a solution to do it wired or wireless! |
Free to good home
Does anyone out there by any chance need an adaptor box from a beta camera (not sp, the one which splits from the recorder section) for studio use? Its old but has never been used.
It clips on the back of the camera and I think gives multicore out. |
Finding Panasonic HDV tapes in a store?

Other RAW cinema cameras?
Silicon Imaging and RED have really blazed a trail with their "RAW" cameras and Adobe are making some very interesting noises about enabling RAW workflows for cinema. Personally, I'm more excited about RAW cameras than I was about HD. I love shooting RAW on my Nikon D50. Capturing RAW means you can grade the pictures so much more elegantly and it also means you don't have to worry too much about digging through massive camera menus on set. You just shoot and tweak to your heart's content in post.
Given that RAW is such a damn good idea and has been proved as a viable shooting format, my question is this: how long do we wait until other manufacturers start offering cameras which record a very lightly compressed copy of exactly what the sensor produces and leaves all the processing to post? Has anyone heard any rumours or speculation about Sony, Canon, Nikon, Sigma etc making RAW movie cameras? Personally, I would kill for something like a Nikon D3 which can shoot 1080p at 25fps RAW with balanced stereo audio which sells for about £4500 (the D3 can already shoot at 11fps at 5 megapixels). Sure, the RED Scarlet gets pretty close and the RED ONE gets very very close. |
What is the best archive solution
I want to digitise my Vid8, Hi8, Digital8 & MiniDV tapes to HDD for storage in a lossless format. I have captured a few tapes through Premiere Elements but the resulting .avi seems to be lower quality than the original tape. I've been researching lossless codecs and found Toponoky and FastCodec but I don't understand how these work with a capture program. I don't want to edit these captures, I just want to keep them as the best possible file type for future burning to DVD, Blueray or whatever new disk/solid state medium comes along. I would like to create DVDs for everyday viewing and understand some resolution loss will have to be accepted. But I want the archived files to the same resolution as the original tapes. I know that all the above formats have varying degrees of compression/resolution. I just don't want the capture to lose even more resolution. Any suggestions?? (many thanks)

Suggest Camera for Film Workshop
I am teaching a motion picture making workshop for teens this summer. There may be a small amount of money for purchase of simple miniDV cameras for students to use.
Can you make a suggestion for inexpensive, and I mean the least expensive, miniDV cameras that might work well? There is not money for "prosumer." Minimum requirements would include a mic out and rugged construction. Thanks for suggestions. |
inexpensive video mixing set up
Hello everyone,
I am working on a project for a small theater and we are tying a theatrical trick that I believe requires a video mixing set up. We need to have two live video feeds (from two cameras) on the same monitor. One has to be slightly transparent and on top of the other image. I looked into getting two blackmagic intensity pro cards and using their 'On Air' program but that is actually more then I think we need. We don't need a high quality image. What would be the most inexpensive set up that I could use? I am using a Mac Pro and/or a Mac Book Pro. |

Radioshack Head Cleaner Tape Problems

Is this a problem with the tape or the camera? thanks in advance. |
Telephoto Lens
Has anyone had success with a lens such as http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...rter_Lens.html or not. I'm trying to find one to rent for a gig, but don't want to rent it if it's not going to work well.
I'm going to hook this on my Sony V1u or Sony Z1u. |
DAR, PAR and strange ratios
Hey guys!
I have a question. I'm finally starting to get my head around aspect ratios and how everything works... but still there are some things I just don't get. Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Normal TV aspect ratio is 1.33, or 4:3, and yeah.. that seems all good for 640x480 for example. But if I would convert this to PAL land for a little while... SD DV is 720x576. In square pixels this is 786x576 for everything to look right on screen, but this means a DAR of 1.3645?? A true 1.33 ratio would mean 768x576, but this in practice doesn't seem to fit the original footage. Same thing is true for widescreen, 16:9 which means 1.78. Again DV is 720x576. The PAR for widescreen is about 1.46, which means that in square pixels this would become 1048x576... but this again equals to DAR of 1.82 where you really want 1.78? Again... what you would want seems to be 1024x576 for a 16:9 relationship but this doesn't seem to fit the original image. Where do I go wrong? Thx a lot! Also.. why are widescreen computer screens 1.6? Shouldn't they be 1.78?? |

Will the new Canon DW-100 burner work with the HG10 Camcorder?
I purchased a Canon HG10 Camcorder in October of 2008 and see there is a new Canon DW-100 DVD burner.
Will the DW-100 work with the HG10 or does it only work with the new VIXIA line of camcorders? For some reason, I thought I heard there might be a firmware upgare to allow its use with the HG10. Thanks! |

I attached a screenshot. Does this mean it will upress a 720 24p sequence from Final Cut Pro to a HD-CAM SR? Does this emulate a Kona board for outputting (keeping in mind that it accepts tri-level sync)?

What do i need to do to get this to play much faster? It takes forever for the player image to display. Once it is up it plays great. But the wait seems endless.

Downconvert HDCAM-SR to DigiBeta
Hello,
I've been through so many forums and emails with Sony regarding their HDCAM-SR deck and attempting a downconvert from the SR (at 23.98fps HD) to Digibeta (SD 30fps). I've managed to get settings on both decks figured out, through help from forums and Sony, but now I am having TC issues. On all my test dubs, the Digibeta TC is roughly 3 seconds off from the master (HD version). Anybody out there have any experience with the SR deck and downconverting? It's taking me way too long to figure this out. Any ideas or input is most helpful. Thanks! |

Interview Audio Clipping
Hello all,
I did a DV interview recently, and being a newbie, didn't realize the importance of a field mixer. The result is audio that clips. In Apple Soundtrack, the clip distortion tool takes care of the distortion but it drops the high end. Anyone had luck with this tool? Any techniques for vocals? Many thanks! Joe |
Lipstick/Bullet cam and IS
Hello. It's bullet cam question day, based on the other thread below. Is there such a thing as a bullet cam that operates with image stabilization?
I'd like to use a small helmet-mounted device to shoot cycling and other action sports and maintain the functionality of the IS in my camera. I'd prefer not mounting my entire camera to my helment. My guess is that this isn't feasible (since the cam has no way to provide the IS control to an accessory lens bringing signal in thru the A/C port) or it would be easy to find them on the 'net but none of the models I've found list this feature. Thanks |
Help me choose a 720p/1080p 30fps camera
Hi,
I'm looking to choose an HD camera that's capable of acquiring 720p and 1080p progressively at 30fps. The idea is to intersperse videogaming footage with talking heads shot with the camera. As games run typically at 60fps or 30fps, the usual 24fps isn't good for me. The only other requirements I'd have would be: 1. Recording to a hard disk would be preferable, as would painless transfer into the CineForm HD codec 2. Reasonably wide-angle lens to accomodate 3-4 people in a studio-like settings 3. Two discrete audio inputs for Mics - XLR inputs? Any suggestions across the price range would be much appreciated. |
Is HDV CMOS "rolling shutter" artifact eliminated with SD recording ?
Please excuse me if this is a stupid question...
There are HDV camcorders with CMOS sensors that can also record in standard definition DV mode. When filming in SD mode does the CMOS sensor operate in a "global shutter" mode, thus eliminating the possible artifect of white bands occuring during flashes of light ? I ask this as I understand that standard definition DV mode records a complete frame each time, whereas the rolling shutter artifact is caused by the sensor sampling different parts between frames which would not seem compatible with DV mode recording. |
How come when I squeeze my Anamorphic 60i footage to widescreen it deinterlaces?
It's the weirdest thing. I'm using DVFilmaker. I have 60i footage shot on a DVX-100a w/anamorphic lens. When I squeeze it to fit a 16X9 box (without converting to 24p) its deinterlaces with the blurry lines when theres alot of motion. When I convert to 24p w/deinterlacing it's fine. Even when I deinterlace its fine. But I want my anamorphic footage to look like raw 60i...NOT deinterlaced 30i/p looking footage.
Anyone have any answers or suggestions? Is it possible? |
Alternate battery for Panny HDC-SD5?
Searching seems to have turned up little information on this... perhaps someone here can help?
The Panasonic HDC-SD5 has an internal battery slot which prevents from upgrading to a longer-life (ie bulkier) battery to get more useful shooting time. It seems to have been matched with 8Gb SDHC card supplied (as a freebie) with the camera for about 90 minutes max use. Its a Li-Ion 7.2v 1320mAh. For an upcoming trip I want to use several 16Gb cards but need to extend the power supply life, and rather than buying half-a-dozen very expensive Panny batteries, I've been trying to find a way to maybe use a longer life (> 3000mAh) Li-Po 7.4v battery (as used in RC toys like aircraft) as an external source by modding the AC power adaptor that fits in the camera with an in-line connector so that I could swap it between the AC charger and the external battery pack (the Li-Po batteries are about 100mm x 40mm x 15mm or so). Anyone ever done anything similar... good or bad experiences... see an fatal flaws in the logic (apart from the potential for exploding batteries if incorrectly charged, etc etc).. Any help or advice gratefully received... |
taking the pulldown out (space issue)
I have a 95 minute movie in an AVI file that's only 20.6 gb. It's 24pA and I need to convert it to true 24p.
I put it into after effects and took the pulldown out and am rendering it out to 23.98. But, it's creating a file that's WAY larger than the original. It says I don't have enough space and I have 43 gb free!!! Why is it so much larger? How much larger is it going to be? Is there any way to keep it closer to the original? |
