Camera as output device

Hey!

Quick question. Canon XL2: Can I use it as the bridge between Final Cut and my external viewing monitor without causing extraneous head damage or anything? I plan on using in "VCR" mode and without a tape when I do this. Thanks!

Greg Boston February 19th, 2009 04:32 AM

Yes, you can use it as an analog pass through device for monitoring. A lot of mini-dv cameras can do this.

As I do understand that it is physically possible, My question is that does this put any extra wear on the camera?

John Miller February 20th, 2009 06:55 AM

No tape = no wear (!)

It might even help the electronics to have some use as not all gear like to sit for long periods waiting to be turned. Just make sure you don't let anything burn into the viewfinder if you leave it on for extended periods of time

Brandon Whiteside February 20th, 2009 07:00 PM

Yeah, I won't even have the viewfinder attached.

Anyways, I have gotten it to work! One small issue. When I play back a clip in FCP in the viewer or the timeline, the image plays back on the screen just fine, but the viewer/timeline window freezes. Once I stop playback, the image on the viewer/timeline matches up to the last frame played back. What's the deal?

Shaun Roemich February 20th, 2009 07:44 PM

It's a tick box in one of the preferences that says something like Mirror on Desktop During Print to Tape. I don't have FCP open or else I'd go find it for you.

Great! I'll search for it when iI get home!!

Last and final question! How would I go about stretching the image to correctly display on the monitor? Its a 4x3 monitor with a 16x9 image. The image fills the entire screen.

Scratch that! I asked too quickly! I'm good! Thanks everyone.
