Does anybody have any insight on how to break into the music video biz?

Well you could volunteer as a Production Assistant on shoots to learn.. (looks like you are in the right state)
Maybe shoot some local bands to learn for yourself.. Set a goal, and start hacking away at it..

Mike, let me rephrase the question. If you already have a crew, how are the deals to direct music videos being made? Do company's have directors on thier slate? Do director's approach the band? What is the standard "Mode of Operation" for this process?

I know I could take a reel and get business knocking on doors, but how is it usually done?

Well I really cannot speak with any authority here.. I have done my share of Music Videos.. But most of them were with local acts.. In that case , at least starting out we approached the band.. If you do a good job, word of mouth will bring more work..
Seems to me that the big big national acts pick and even line up for directors they want..
I think your best chance is to work locally and try to catch a band that is up and coming..
