Video Assist
 

Recently bought Presario X1000 laptop. Led to believe I could use for video assist monitor and rough field editing. What do I need & how can I get the laptop screen to show what my Sony DCR-VX2000 sees? Thanks!

equipment, but okay.

Yes this is possible. I use a laptop for final editing as well. I'm not
sure how much field editing would work for your, but that is a
personal preference ofcourse.

Editing applications come with a capture application that you
can easily use to capture the footage you are recording but they
can also be used to view the footage. Just load up the capture
part and it will display the signal coming from the camera.

If you want to use a seperate capture application Scenalyzer
might be a good thing to try.

Thank you, Rob, especially for the 'normally' part. I needed that. I did ask before I ordered it. I was led to believe that it was almost simply a matter of connecting with a firewire.

My main question, anyway, was 'Is is possible to use the laptop screen as a monitor....video assist. I know I can capture video for editing.

Your smart answer must mean that my question wasn't intelligent enough for you.

But to be a bit more clear.

Yes you can use a laptop as a video assist. At least if I under-
stand you correctly. To do this you will need an application that
can view the incoming video stream. The only applications that
do that (to the best of my knowledge) are capture applications.

So you DON'T HAVE to start a capture, but you do need such an
application to see what the camera is seeing (so to speak).

Plug the firewire cable in your laptop, start a capture application
and you can see what is happening. That is all there is to it.

And my answer wasn't a smart one. I was merely pointing out
that you would normally research such things before buying.

Turns out, after exhaustive examination, that the new computer has a problem. I thought I was doing something wrong, but the unit was unable to recognize and therefore deal with any external device (like a camera). It is in the shop.
