Medea G-Raid

Well, I'm pretty impressed that Medea is offering this new Firewire 800 RAID solution, where you can mirror 320Gb for $398 (BHPhoto price).

One thing I called them about, and their answer struck me as odd... if one of your drives goes bad under warranty, they want you to send the entire thing, not just the bad drive. For those of you who may already use a Medea RAID product, is this really how they do it? It seems to defeat half the purpose of RAID. (Half being convenience in that you can keep working, and the other half being safety of your data).

Actually, if you have to send off the whole thing, it sort of compromises both of the above.

Hey Imran,

How are you doing?? Hope you made it through Frances Ok..
Anyway I believe you may be confusing a Raid 0 with a Raid 5 type drve array.. If I remember correctly the Raid 5 type is the one that is used like in a server or by a bank.. where there is Redundancey, You could have one drive go bad, but the system will still retain all the data and continue to work.. I believe raid 0 (which this may model may be) is taking several drives and striping them together to give you the increased size and throughput, but not the Redundancey..

Hope this makes sense.. and do not quote me, but I believe that is the difference.. by the way i have an older Medea array, and they are excellent.. they can be pricey, but the reliability and the service from Medea is top notch..

take care,
any progress on your short?

Hey Mike, luckily made it through Frances unscathed. Just got power back too.

Hmmm... for some reason I thought the FW800 G-Raid is supposed to do mirroring, which is Raid 1. At least that's what the sales dude on the phone had me thinking. Will do some more research...

I think it will do either depending on how you set it up. Usually the setup is implemented via software. However, it could be done via firmware and may not be subject to user modification.

Hello,

if it is Raid 1 then yep, it does mirroring..Here is a chart i found which shows all the different Raid levels and compares them to each othere.. (never knew there were so many)

It looks like you are correct, the FW800 G-Raid is just a Raid 0 - i.e., striping, not mirroring.

It seems the Medea Firefly is the more flexible (and much more expensive) solution for mirroring.

There's also this snazzy option... You can get just the enclosure for $459 and outfit your own drives.
