Please help with shotgun mic!

Hey folks,

I'm about to buy a shotgun mic for dialogue recording(for a movie) and i'm kind of lost about which one to buy.Could anyone please give some help on that.I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.Can i get a fairly good shotgun for under $350.00?
I've been looking at the Azden SGM-2X.It's a good deal($249.00) and it comes with 2 widescreens, mic shock mount and other little things.Has someone used it ?Is it any good?Anyone know what's the minimum distance you have to keep it from the actors to record descent audio?
Also ,a mic with a sensitiveness of -39dB have a higher or lower sensitiveness than one w/ -41dB(sorry if it sounds stupid!).

Thanks again guys.

Generally speaking, in basic terms, the more money you can throw at a mic, the better the performance. A $500 mic will usually give better value than a $250 mic. How important is your audio? Determine your budget and get the best you can afford.

I've used the Azden SGM-2X (219.00 from B&H) and for a low(er) end mic it worked very well.

I ran the SGM-2X through a Mackie mixer to a Beachtek unit on my VX2000. Was pretty happy with the sound. It's a good set up if you have a few extra hands. If you're going solo, the Azden will give you fairly good sound mounted on the camera.

Depending on where you live, you might try renting a few different set ups and see which one you like best. Considering getting a better mic for another $200-$300 is similar to the tripod quagmire, a few extra dollars on the front end can make a big difference in your production and possibly give you a more versitile piece of equipment.
