The look of "Collateral" question
 

I have a question.

I was watching "Collateral". Michael Mann said it was mostly shot on digital video. I notice when objects, like cars (mostly wheels) or street light poles pass in the shot, frame by frame, they are represented in a cluster of that object. 4-5 light poles evenly spaced, blending in together.

Why is this?

Shooting in 24P, regardless of shutter speed, there should only be 24 (23.98) shots in a second. Each frame exposed just once.

Right?

Why the appearance of multiple exposures in a single frame?

Doesn't seem to be a long duration exposure smear. Multiple separate exposures.

This (if I remember correctly) is present in "Miami Vice". And some night footage of some reality shows, I assume shot in 60i. My Z7U may do it too, I just haven't used it under those conditions to notice.

I don't think it is only in night time footage, but in footage of the city at night, it really jumps out at you.

What am I missing?

It may be internal reflexions due to the multiple elements of the lens!

I'm sure a lot of this effect is done in post production. Remember in Hollywood anything is possible, even with the "reality" shows.
