70mm film would be what resolution?
 

Somebody said that the 1" sensor on the ax100 is slightly bigger than super16mm film and 4k can be squeezed from it and I suppose 8mm film is a bit like vhs 3/4k 720x480 wheras 35mm film or FF sensors can crank out 4&5&6K digital. What pray tell will the digital equivalent of Cinerama 70mm film be capable of ? 16K?

You can scan film at any scanner resolution your scanner supports. But just because you scan a film at 4000 ppi, doesn't mean you capture actual optical resolution at that level. But, in general (say that again, in general), modern color negative film is good for around 4000 ppi at best. So usually somewhat less than that. This is true regardless of the size of the film, from Minox to 10x8 sheets, and all the cinema and stills formats in between, and beyond.

So all you need do is multiply by your image dimensions, and there's your answer.
