The photographer has a gas mask on, so should be OK regarding the tear gas, it's the protagonists that can cause the problems in these circumstances.

Beautiful juxtapositioning of the elements in that photograph, in line with the classic 'eye flow' of good design. If you look at the posing of the talent, it conveys multiple stories in the one image just like those old medieval paintings.

Full range of detail in the whites of the smoke and also the shadow tones of the equipment and uniforms.

It's a top photo and will in time be regarded as a classic. Five stars.
