We recently got s NAS for our video production house and it has changed the way we work and manage our data! So much so that we decided to write up about it:

Even with a background in IT I found that I was not enough of a geek to fully understand all of the networking features of my Synology DS918+ and felt that it really needed a friendlier interface layer for the non-expert user to hide some of the technical stuff.

Despite that, I managed to store nearly 40 years of VHS, HDV, AVCHD and 4K recordings securely on mirrored drives. I can now stream 4k to my big TV downstairs and I'm working on providing a streaming service to a few of my customers.

So yes, I wouldn't work without a NAS box now and often use it for large editing projects. The only downside I've found is that when starting an edit session, the NAS drives take so long to wake up from their sleep state that the edit software starts marking NAS file as offline. You can stop the drives from sleeping but I'd rather not have them running continuously.

I would still keep another backup of the files. I have a Synology DS413J. Over the last couple of weeks I have had a few corrupted files on one of the Directories. Not all just the one directory. Luckily I have other backups or I would have lost those files.
I really like using it but would not trust as my only source of files. It is set up with 4 WD NAS 4T drives I make sure the software is also up to date. Very convenient for quick access but for long term storage not trustworthy and LTO tape is a better choice I think.

I already have a Synology DS214se that I have been using as a network storage device for my non-video art files and all other items. Highly recommend the things. That said, it hadn't even occurred to me that they (better models) could be used as a serious storage array for video work.

If you are sharing the NAS and are using a managed switch you may gain some bandwidth port bonding (or link aggregation) https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowl...twork_linkaggr
